George Washington Buchanan

George Washington Buchanan, b March 9,1876 at Howell, Tennessee, d October 22, 1959 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas - was a son of James Pryor Buchanan, and came to Texas in 1894 when eighteen years of age. He worked in Waco, Moody, Rosebud, and Marlin, where, on February 28, 1900, he was married to Grace Smith, b April 29, 1877, d October 8, 1955 and both buried in Calvary Cemetery in Marlin - a daughter of Charles Smith, b August 28, 1847 in England, d February 7, 1925 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas, and his wife, Mary (Renzenberger) Smith, b January 18, 1849 in Kansas, d February 1923 in Marlin and both buried in Calvary Cemetery in Marlin. Mr. Smith was crushed to death between a switching train in front of his home, located on Bennett Street, in Marlin.

George Buchanan worked at a livery stable in Rosebud, and then at Fannin's Livery in Marlin, until he became a driver for Wells Fargo. He was Express Agent and Messenger on the Yoakum - Waco Route, traveling miles which equalled ten times the distance around the world.

The Buchanans were members of the First Presbyterian Church of Marlin and they had one son:

George Smith Buchanan, b December 18, 1901 in Rosebud, Falls County, Texas, d December 18, 1962married Lennie Florence Atkins - daughter of Joseph Green and Willie Etta (Scarborough) Atkins.
