George Smith Buchanan

George Smith Buchanan, b December 18, 1901 in Rosebud, Falls County, Texas, d December 18, 1962, as the result of an automobile accident and buried in Calvary Cemetery in Marlin - was the only child of George Washington and Grace (Smith) Buchanan.

George Smith Buchanan was married in Dallas, Texas in 1922 to Lennie Florence Atkins, b October 24, 1899 near Powers Chapel, Falls County, Texas - a daughter of Joseph Green Atkins, b October 12, 1878, d February 1, 1902 in Fort Worth, Texas, and his wife, Willie Etta (Scarborough) Atkins, b February 14, 1880, d October 24, 1899. Lennie was reared by her relatives.

George Smith Buchanan worked for Nash-Robinson Lumber Company in Marlin before his association with the Marlin Daily Democrat, becoming its Publisher and Editor after the death of Mr. J. M. Kennedy, who had owned the newspaper. He served as President of the Marlin Chamber of Commerce, during which time in the late 1930's and the 1940's he promoted community programs for the entire trade area of the county, with members of the Chamber traveling to each area, which provided food and fun for the visitors. George also promoted the Camera Club, which held Bluebonnet Festivals each year. He served as an officer of The First Presbyterian Church of Marlin, and was also a member of the Rotary Club.

George Smith and Lennie Florence (Atkins) Buchanan had one son, George Atkins Buchanan, who resides in Houston, Texas. He is not married.
