Robert Talmadge Brothers

Robert Talmadge Brothers (called "Sport"), b September 22, 1891 at Stranger, Falls County, Texas, d February 3, 1957 and buried in Calvary Cemetery in Marlin, Texas-was a son of Taylor Franklin and Lenora Elizabeth ("Nora" Pool) Brothers. On November 6, 1919 in Falls County, Texas, "Sport" married Sadie I. Hayes, b September 8, 1896 - a daughter of Thomas Leslie and Edna (Arnett) Hayes.

"Sport" and Sadie lived in the large built by his parents at Stranger, reared their children, who all attended school at Stranger. They were members of the Methodist-Presbyterian Union Church at Stranger- being Presbyterians by denomination; and they farmed in the Stranger Community until November 1942 when "Sport" moved his family into Marlin, Texas. He was elected Justice of the Peace in 1954, and was serving a second term when he died. He sold the family farm to his nephew, Dr. Wesley Frank McKinley, Jr.- son of his sister, Winnie (Brothers) McKinley. Only the silo remains near the old site.

Robert Talmadge and Sadie I. (Hayes) Brothers were the parents of six children:
Edna Fay Brothers, b August 28,1921 at Stranger, d June 4, 1982 and buried in Calvary Cemetery in Marlin - married a Mr. Lindsey, but had no children. She worked as an L. V. N. in a nursing in New Braunfels, Texas.

Taylor Franklin Brothers, b October 25, 1923 at Stranger - married March 22, 1953 to Venita Rosella Drews, b December 28, 1933 - a daughter of Fred Gottlieb and Lora (Grube) Drews. Taylor served in the U. S. Army Air Corps during World War II-in France and Germany, being discharged April 1946 as a Sergeant. He and Venita have three children: Larry Dean Brothers, b July 2, 1955 - is not married, and works for his maternal grandfather and uncle, Drews Lumber Company, in Marlin, Texas; Jeanette Fay Brothers, b October 12, 1959 - is not married, and works for Kash - Way Grocery in Marlin, Texas, where she lives; and Phyllis Ann Brothers, b February 17, 1962 who married in June 1983 to Charles Freeman and has no children - resides in Kentucky where Charlie works for his uncle in a box manufacturing business. Taylor went to work for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Marlin, where he continues to be employed as a male nurse. Venita works with her father and brother at Drews Lumber Company.

Robert Leslie Brothers, b March 22, 1925 at Stranger, d 1964 and buried in Calvary Cemetery at Marlin - married Elizabeth (maiden name unknown), of San Angelo, Texas, and had four daughters. Robert worked as a clerk in a Grocery Store in PIano, Texas, until his death.

David Eugene Brothers, b 1927 - married Martha Peeples of Nacogdoches, Texas and has two sons: David Eugene Brothers, Jr. who is married, has a daughter, and resides in Sugarland, Texas; and Scott Brothers who is married, has no children, and resides in Hous- ton, Texas. David, Sr. enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1945 - serving in San Diego, California until discharged in 1948. He received his degree from Baylor University in Waco, and went to work for Bell Telephone Company that same year in 1952. His first location with Bell was in Nacogdoches where he met and married his wife, and he continues with the same company in Houston, Texas, where he now resides.

Ethel Mozelle Brothers, b 1929 at Stranger - married first to Jack Martyr and had one son, Gary Spencer Martyr who is unmarried and resides in Dallas, Texas. Ethel married second to R. D. Powers, who is deceased. She continues as a Licensed Vocational Nurse in the Torbett - Hutchings - Smith Memorial Hospital in Marlin, Texas, and she resides in Marlin.

Billy Benjamin Brothers, b 1931 at Stranger - married Margaret (maiden name unknown), and has five children - including four sons and one daughter. Billy served in the Korean War in the U.S. Navy. He works for an Oil Drilling Company, and presently resides in Dayton, Texas.

Sadie I. (Hayes) Brothers continues to live in a nursing in New Braunfels, where she continues to play her favorite game of "42." She used to periodically visit a few days in Marlin with some of her children but they visit her in New Braunfels now.
