Hale Barton

Surnames: BARTON, HALE, MORGAN, RUCKER, McGREW

Hale Barton, b 1800 in Rutherford County, Tennessee, died January 16, 1839 in the Indian battle on the Brazos River, following the Morgan Massacre - was married in Rutherford County, Tennessee in 1829 to Lucinda Rucker. Hale was a son of Joshua and Jane (Hale) Barton, and nephew of Robert Barton and David Barton II, who came to Texas with a sister, Amanda, and two brothers: Thomas Barton - who was massacred by the Indians at Dawson in Navarro County in November 1838; and David Armstrong Barton - who married January 27, 1842 in Robertson County, Texas to Samantha McGrew, and was killed by Indians in 1846.

Hale's sister, Amanda Barton, married May 28, 1838 in Robertson County, Texas to Andrew Jackson Morgan, b ca 1817 in Alabama, killed by Indians in 1846 at the same time his brother-in-law, David Armstrong Barton was killed - son of George and (wife unknown) Morgan, who were both massacred by Indians at their home on January 1, 1939, which was located in present-day Falls County, Texas, on the Brazos River. Hale and Lucinda (Rucker) Barton's son, James S. Barton, confirmed that it was his father - and not his uncle, David Armstrong Barton (as recorded in previous histories) who was killed by Indians on January 16, 1839; and further stated he had seen his father's body after he was killed. James S. Barton was returned to Tennessee to live with his paternal grandparents, Joshua and Jane (Hale) Barton; and later, after the death of David Armstrong Barton in 1846, his daughter, Elizabeth Barton, was also returned to the paternal grandparents in Tennessee. Elizabeth Barton's maternal grandfather, George Washington McGrew, was also killed in the same Indian battle as her father, on January 16, 1839.
