Walter E. Gilmore
October 19, 1919 – February 20, 2008

Walter E. Gilmore, 88, died February 20, 2008 in Amarillo Texas. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 15, 2008 at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Marlin, Texas. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd., Amarillo, Texas, 79109.

Walter was born October 19, 1919 on a farm in Marlin Texas to William and Maggie Gilmore. His education at Texas A&M was interrupted for service in World War II. He was a navigator in the Air Corps and flew many long lonesome missions out over the south Pacific. His only brother Will was lost in the war in North Africa in 1943. Walter met his future wife, Emma Helen Loetterle, a dietitian, at the US Army Hospital of the Pacific on the island of Guam. Walter became a geologist and explored the earth for oil, rock and stone for 40 years, retiring from Lone Star Industries in 1985. Emma preceded Walter in death in 2004. He was a proud Texas Aggie and long time resident of College Station, Texas. He moved to Canyon, Texas in 2004 and had many wonderful friends living at the Connor House. He enjoyed a close relationship with God, his family, the weather, science/engineering and a good number of lucky dogs and cats.

He dearly loved his family and was loved by all who knew him. He lived a life that gave God pleasure.

He is survived by three sons, William of Canyon, Texas; Walter of Santa Fe, New Mexico; and Peter of Belton, Texas; a daughter, Edith of Washington, D.C.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
