DIES AT 76

       Mrs. Margaret Ann Gates, 76, died Saturday night at the of her son, J. K. Gates, in Scyrene after a short illness.  She had been in declining health for several years.  Funeral services were held in the Salem Baptist church, of which she had been a member over fifty years.  Interment followed at Salem cemetery.  Rev. E. O. Jackson officiated.

       The deceased was born in Texas in 1860 and moved to Alabama a few years later after her father had been killed in the War between the States.  She made the trip in a covered wagon with her uncle, David A. White, Sr.  She was married to John N. Gates in 1879, he having died in 1927.  She was a devout Christian and an active worker in the church during her active life.  One of Clarke county's oldest citizens, she was highly respected and loved by all who knew her.

       She leaves six children to mourn her passing, Mrs. Alice Stuckey and E. G. Gates, of Thomasville; W. H. Gates, of Chilton Texas; J. K. Gates of Scyrene; Mike Gates, of Dickinson and Mrs. Sara Poole, of Whatley.  She also leaves a number of grandchildren.
