       Services for Charles E. Gates, 68, of Baytown were scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Roy Parker officiating.

       A native of Chilton, Gates died Friday in a Baytown hospital.

       He moved to Baytown in 1945 and was retired from Exxon Refinery.  He was a deacon of the First Baptist Church, a member of the Goose Creek Masonic Lodge 1192, Baytown Shrine Club-Arabia Shrine, Knights Templar, past patron of the Order of the Eastern Star-Goose Creek Chapter 798, Senior Vice Commander of the Disabled American Veterans and a member of the ground crew of the Eighth Air Force during World War II.

       Gates is survived by his wife, Willa Deane Gates of Baytown, two sisters and a brother-in-law, Lucielle Mitchell of China Springs, Jewel and John Garner of Hagerman, N. M.; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Curtis and Jean Marable of Stinnett; five nieces and nephews, Ann Marable of Witchita Falls; Deana Marable of Dallas; Kenneth Gates of Moody; Vermel Bland of Rockdale; and Bobbie Jean Nelson of China Springs.

       Gates was preceded in death by his parents, William and Minnie Gates and two brothers, Vincent and John Wilson Gates.

       Graveside services will be at held 10 a.m. Monday at Lieb Cemetery in Hutchinson County.

       Services are under the direction of Navarre's Paul U. Lee Funeral Home.

       In lieu of usual remembrances, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church building fund.
