Mr. and Mrs. Earls Adams And Scobe Crawford Are Victims

Owned Eddy Gin

Auto Thrown 200 Feet And Bodies Badly Mangled

EDDY, Dec 19—Three persons were killed at 6:30 p.m. today when their automobile was struck by a northbound Missouri-Kansas and Texas train at a grade crossing a mile south of Eddy, just off the Temple highway.

The dead were B. E. Adams, 35, Eddy ginner; his wife, and Scobe Crawford, half-brother of Mrs. Adams.

Their bodies were mangled badly and the car was flung more than 200 feet down the track.

There were no witnesses other than the train crew, members of which said they supposed the occupants of the car did not see nor hear the train when they drove on the crossing.

     B. F. Hudson, of Smithville, said the highway paralleled the tracks at that point and the motorists had turned eastward to a side road which crossed the railroad and approached the train on the side opposite to that on which he sat in the engine cab. “We are making good time into Waco and I had no idea that an automobile was on the crossing until the fireman grabbed my arm and yelled, ‘you’re going to hit a car’”, he related. “I jerked on the brakes but heard the crash at the same time.”

The train, which was held up for more than an hour while investigation was carried on by the Falls county sheriff and the coroner, was allowed to proceed.

Mr. Adams owned the gin at Eddy and was well known here. He owned the gin at Blevins until about a year ago. He and his wife lived in Eddy, and Mr. Crawford lived at Blevins.

Mr. Adams was the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Adams of Blevins, and Mrs. Adams was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Gumm, also of Blevins.

Adams is survived by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. John Adams of Blevins. Mrs. Adams is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Gumm of Blevins, four brothers and four sisters.
