Byron Campbell Courtney, Jr.
January 8, 1916 – April 30, 2007

 

     Byron C. Courtney, Jr., 91, of Waco died at his on Monday, April 30, 2007, and entered into the loving arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus, where we're sure that he heard, "Welcome home, my good and faithful servant.  "He was also reunited with his beloved wife, Virginia, where both are now singing with the angels. 

 

     Services will be 2 p.m., Thursday, May 3, at Connally/Compton Funeral Directors Chapel with the Rev. Jimmie Spann officiating.  Burial will follow in Waco Memorial Park.  Visitation with family and friends will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, May 2, at the funeral home.

 

     He was born on January 8, 1916, in the community of Blevins, Texas, to Robbie (Dacus) Courtney and Byron Courtney, Sr. He grew up on the family farm there, and moved to Waco when he was a young man.  It was there that he met and married the love of his life, Virginia Pack.  Together they reared five children and spent the rest of their lives in Waco except for a tour of duty with the Army Air Corps during World War II.  Afterwards, he spent 37 years with Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. where he was known as "Barney.  "Byron and Virginia were active members of Memorial Baptist Church, where he served as choir director for many years until it closed.  The majority of the remaining members moved their memberships to Emmanuel Baptist Church.  A short while later, Byron then moved his membership to Westwood Baptist Church and served as temporary choir director there until recently.

 

     Preceding Byron in death were his parents; sisters, Theresa Courtney and Ida Mae Courtney Thompson; wife, Virginia; grandson, Michael Trombley; and granddaughter, Tracy Trombley Braswell.

 

     Those left behind to cherish his memory are sons, Byron Campbell Courtney, III "Toey" and wife, Linda of Winnsboro, Texas, and Gary Courtney and wife, Jean Ann of Lorena; daughters, Sandy Culverhouse and husband, Grover, Ruby Trombley and husband, Jim, and Barbara Beard and husband, John, all of Waco; several nieces & nephews; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

 

     Serving, as pallbearers will be John Beard, Brady Courtney, Royce Courtney, Greg Culverhouse, Grover Culverhouse and Jim Trombley.
