Long-Time
Groceryman
Dies at 53

 

     W. H. (Red) Calvery of 1420 North Ninth Street, a long-time groceryman and horse enthusiast, died at 9:25 p.m. Saturday in a local hospital. He was 53.

 

     Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. today in Connally Chapel, Rev. Roy L. Smith officiating, assisted by Rev. Arliss Fuller. Burial will be in Waco Memorial Park.

 

     Mr. Calvery was born at Eddy. He spent most of his life at Lott, where he and his wife operated a grocery store from 1938 until eight years ago. Since then they had operated a store on Colcord Avenue.

 

     While in Lott, Mr. Calvery was a member of the school board for 14 years. He was a charter member and past president of the Lott Lions Club and never missed a meeting while he lived in Lott.

 

     He was announcer for many years at the Lions club horse show, and since he had lived in Waco had been an active member and past president of Heart O' Texas Saddle Club.

 

     He was a veteran of World War II and was a member of Brook Avenue Baptist Church.

 

     Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mrs. John McKenzie of 1420 North Ninth; a foster son, Bill Maxey of 1420 North Ninth; a sister, Mrs. O. M. Martin of 1416 Connor Avenue; four brothers, W. W. (Bill) Calvery of Lott, Grady Calvery of 512 Powers Street, Edwin Calvery of 3525 Homan Avenue and Harley Calvery of Tyler; three grandsons and several nieces and nephews.
