Dr. J. A. Davis, age 68 years, died at his in Marlin about 9:30 o'clock Saturday night. He had been confined with illness since December 3.
A native of North Carolina, Dr. Davis was born in that state July 4, 1863. He was a soldier in the United States army during the Spanish - American war and came to Marlin about 30 years ago, pursuing his profession of veterinary surgeon. He was married here to Miss Sallie Courtney. He was a member of the Methodist church, a Mason and held the esteem of many friends.
Surviving are his widow, a son, Burt, and a daughter, Miss Audrey Davis, of Marlin.
Funeral services were held at three o'clock Sunday afternoon, last rites being conducted at the funeral chapel by Rev. H. L. Munger, pastor of the First Methodist church, and Rev. E. L. Ingrum, presiding elder of the Marlin district.
Burial was in Calvary cemetery, members of Marlin lodge No. 152
A. F. and A. M. according honors of the order at the grave.
Pall bearers were B. C. Bratton, S. C. Johnson, Ben Freeman, T. B. Bryden, Dr. J. W. Torbett, Dr. Howard Smith, Dr. S. A. Watts, A. M. Schober, J. D. Houston, W. T. Goode, O. A. Edwards.
Out of town relatives in Marlin for the funeral included W. R. Davis of Brenham, Mrs. W. R. Marshall of New Baden, and Rev. and Mrs. M. A. Marshall of Otto.
