HUNTING FOR BURIED TREASURE.
-----
Confederate Veteran Says that It ex-
ists Near of Marlin.
-----
Hiram Walker, an ex-Confederate soldier, is a believer in the legend, which has
existed, long years, that there is buried treasure near Marlin. He
believes it so strongly that he has spent weeks and months in search of it.
Wilson says he has inside information which
he will not divulge to any one. He declares that his chart points with
unerring certainty to the existence of Mexican gold in large quantities within
two miles of Marlin. It is recalled that within the two last decades other
gold hunters have visited the vicinity in which Wilson is now operating.
That they came and went noiselessly and the only trace they left were holes in
the groung, (sic) all dug about the same depth and within a radius of a half
mile. These holes were dug a mile and a half to two miles north of town.
If any money was ever found, its discovery was kept a profound secret, as was
the identity of the party who were doing the hunting.
Hiram Wilson was a member of Gen. Ross'
expedition to the Pease river country when Cyntha (sic) Ann Parker was rescued
from her life of enforced savagery and restored to her people. Mr. Wilson
does not talk very readily about this, but it is a matter of record that he was
there with Gen. Ross when the latter and (h)is men executed the famous coup on
the Red Men.
There are not many here who attach any
great importance to the old veteran's belief that he has a cinch on finding any
buried gold around here, but he persists in his determination and nothing swerve
him from it. He spent many years in New Mexico and in the great west since
the (missing) and has been back in the county about half a dozen years.
