A NEGRO SHOT.
-----
Charley Conoly Is Wounded By
M. Matthews.
-----
Will Probably Prove Fatal
-----
A shooting occurred at the southern limit of the city at 12 o'clock Thursday in
which Charley Conoly was shot by Mallard Matthews and probably fatally wounded.
The two darkies reside on the Oltorf place
in the southwestern portion of the city and are neighbors. There was some
trouble between them yesterday afternoon and it is said that Charley displayed a
gun and made threats against Mallard. They met again at twelve and the
shooting followed.
Conoly was in a wagon and got out, and
according to Mallard's statement went to draw his gun when Mallard fired twice
in rapid succession. One ball entered the abdomen a few inches above the
waist-band and was cut out from the back. This wound will probably prove fatal.
The other shot took effect in the right leg
and is not dangerous.
Mallard surrendered and is held pending the
result of the wound.
