Marlin, April 29, 1902.
A mass meeting of the citizens of Marlin was held in the parlors of the
Arlington Hotel at 8:30 o'clock Monday evening.
The object of the metting, (sic) as stated
by J. M. Kennedy, was to extend an invitation to the members of the Texas Press
Associaton to hold their annual meeting in Marlin in 1903.
Dr. L. P. Robertson was elected chairman
and E.P. Hutchings secretary.
A resolution was offered by L. Z. Harrison,
seconded by C. L. Fannin, and unanimously carried that the citizens of Marlin
extend an invitation to the Texas Press Association to hold its annual meeting
in 1903 in Marlin. The resolution was warmly supported by speeches by
Mayor Shelton, Dan M. Jackson, Dr. L. P. Robinson and others.
Motion by W. W. Allen that a delegation of
citizens be appointed and requested to accompany the newspaper men of Marlin to
Gainesville at the meeting of the Texas Press Association for the purpose of
extending the invitation mentioned. On this committee were appointed:
Mayor Wm. Shelton, Dan M. Jackson, L. Z. Harrison, W. W. Allen and C. L. Fannin.
The following parties were appointed a
committee to prepare an invitation from the citizens of Marlin to be presented
to said press assocation at the Gainesville meeting asking that the 1903 meeting
be held in Marlin; J. M. Kennedy, Prentice Oltorf and C. L. Fannin.
The committee appointed to go with the
newspaper men of Marlin to Gainesville were assured that the citizens woudl back
them up in their most zealous efforts to induce the Press Association to meet
here next year.
