Daughters Of Confederacy
~~~~~
Entertainment In Honor Of Lee's
Birthday
~~~~~

    The daughters of the Confederacy held a very interesting meeting at the of Mrs. B. J. Linthicum, on Thursday afternoon, this being in honor of Gen. Robert E. Lee's birthday.
    Although the weather was very disagreeable, some forty odd gathered on this occasion.
    The meeting was opened with the lord's prayer.  Roll call was answered with bits of news concerning Lee.
    The following programme was then rendered:
    Vocal Solo. - Mrs. Torbett.
    Sketch of Lee's Life. - Mrs. C. C. Chatham.
    Vocal Solo. - Miss Finks.
    Vocal Solo. - Mrs. W. E. Johnson.
    After completing this, a lively contest was engaged in.  Cards were passed around, on which was to be written a war telegram, consisting of ten words, so arranged that the first letter of each word would spell "Robert E. Lee".  There were so many e's in his name, that nearly every message had the armies moving east or eastward and we feel sure that ere now they have arrived at their destination.
    The judges decided that the telegram of Mrs. J. C. Holloway, was the best, and awarded her first prize, a dainty silk handkerchief apron.  Her telegram was as follows" "Reinforce our brigade, enemy repulsed to-day, expect last engagement early."
    Mrs. W. J. Finks received the booby, a bottle of "ketchup", her telegram was as follows: "Run on boys, earn rotten taters, earn lots, easy, early."
    Mrs. Cam Fannin won the consolation, a beautiful embroidered centerpiece.
    The hostess served lovely refreshments, consisting of salad, sandwiches, wafers, olives, salted almonds, tea and wafers.
    Those present besides members of the chapter were: Mesdames
W. W. Allen, W. H. Allen, H. C. Crawford, Frank, Cheeves, B. G. Ward, Sommerville.  Duncan, Cam Fannin, J. C. Holloway, Smith, Bartlett, Keese, Hunnicutt, W. J. Finks, Earl Smith, W. E. Johnson, Torbett, Dupree, Simon, Fred Fleming, Corsicana; Misses Frank and Frank.
