LOCALS.

       The Commissioner's court met in special session Wednesday and accepted the resignation of Frank M. Boyles as county attorney.  Geo. H. Carter, the County Attorney-elect was appointed to fill the vacancy until the votes of the election are canvassed.

       The Ladies cemetery Association has put the cemetery grounds in good condition, having been enabled to do so through the generous donation made by Col. A. E. Watson and the association through its president, Mrs. W. S. Clark, and its secretary and treasurer, Mrs. A. W. Foster, desire to express their thanks to Col. Watson and all others who have assisted in this work of love.

       S. D. Burke, of Kaufman county, is in the city.  Mr. Burke was formerly a citizen of Falls county and has many old friends here.

       Me, women and children will enjoy the entertainment on Hallowe'en eve at Oakland.

       County court has not accomplished much this week.  Since Monday only one case has be(en) heard that of Griggs vs. Bart(missing) appealed from Precinct No. 7.  The court has this case under advisement.

       Secretary S. H. Johnson, of the Falls County Truck Growers' and Farmers Institute, has received a letter from Prof. J. H. Connell, of the A. & M. college saying that he will take pleasure in addressing the Institute, and the farmers generally of Falls county as soon as he can arrange to spare the time.  He will fix the date later and the same will be amply published.

       Editor Warrock, of the Rosebud News has recently installed a power press, enlarged and otherwise improved the paper.  The News has always been a creditable publication and in its improved form is a splendid representative of push and progress.

       A small flow of water has been struck in the artesian well being bored at Rosebud.  The drill passed through about six feet in to the water producing rocks and the machinery was stopped for the purpose of changing drills.  The pressure has increased considerably and the drillers think they will have a strong flow.  The Well is now about 2025 feet deep and they have just passed through about 300 feet of hard rock.  The water is about the same as the artesian water at Waco.

       A cutting affray occurred in the Spencer Alley Saturday night in which Jordon Hanna was stabbed in the side by Dan Cox.  The wound is not serious.  Both parties are colored.

       The democratic candidates opened the campaign at Westphalia Wednesday.  Congressman Henry was present and made a speech.  Mr. Henry has announced a number of dates for this county.

       County Attorney Frank Boyles is in Bremond conducting a protracted meeting for Rev. Mr. Collins the Methodist pastor at that place.

       Parties for pecan hunting are quite the order now.  There is a pretty fair yield this year and many bushels are being gathered every day.

       Mayor Shelton reports matters exceedingly quiet around the city hall.  The boys, the Judge thinks, finds time a little too dull to indulge in hilarities and attendant expensive experiences.

       Sheriff Henry Watts, of Palestine, has arrested Conductor John Wright on a warrant charging him with negligent homicide.  Conductor Wright was the man in charge of the freight train which crashed into the
passenger train at Lewis a few days ago, in which two men were killed and several others injured.  Mr. Wright was placed under a bond for his appearance at Hearne, where the trial will come up.  Sheriff Watts also holds a warrant for Engineer O'Dell, who is wanted on the same charge.

       Mr. Loring, of Ennis, has arrived and will take charge of the telephone exchange.  Mr. Loring has been with the company a number of years.  Mr. Chambers who has been here for several days temporarily in charge has tested the entire system and has put in new batteries and otherwise improved the system where needed.

       A meeting of colored citizens is being held this afternoon for the purpose of electing delegates to a conference of colored men to be held in Houston in a few days.  The object of the conference is to adopt measures to better the moral, educational and industrial conditions of the negro race in Texas.  The movement has the endorsement of the leading men of the race in the state.

       I. J. Nathan has returned from a business trip to Temple.

       Mr. H. G. Rush has returned from San Antonio where he went to distribute the folders of the Marlin Business League.  Mr. Rush put out 6000 of them in San Antonio and at the fair.  It is believed that this advertising will bring immediate results Mr Rush says he found a great many people who had heard of Marlin and were anxious to learn more of it.

       Miss Katie Dupree has returned from a visit to Waco.

       Dock O'Neal was tried in the Mayor's court this mornign and acquitted of a charge of assault and battery.

       John Bellinger, who is at Waco with the Wells-Fargo Express Co., was here Saturday to see his father.

       Mrs. L. R. Bushnell left Saturday for Beaumont where they will reside.  Mr. Bushnell will leave for that place in a few days.

       Mrs. Willie May Bertrand and daughter have returned to Sugarland after a visit to her parents, Judge and Mrs. Wm. Shelton.

       Mayor R. B. Spencer, of Dublin, is in the city on business.

        

       Mrs. D. H. Hotchkiss and Miss Nixon are visiting in Waco.

       C. A. Norwood left yesterday for San Angelo after some cattle for Mose Levy to put them on feed here for the markets.

       Chairman N. J. Lewellyn, of the Central Campaign Committee, has put out a number of appointments for speakers in the county this week. The purpose of the campaign is to get out a full vote if possible on Nov. 4, so that the county's representation may not be reduced in the conventions two years hence.

       Marlin and vicinity was visited by a heavy downpour of rain on Sunday afternoon and it has not quit yet.

Judge Boyles has set all the cases on the docket for the special term on days after this week, owing to the inclemency of the weather, election, etc.

       Waco is just now the mecca of the Baptist delegates, the Baptist State Convention and Auxiliary (sic) societies meeting there this week.

       The H. & T. C. passenger train due here at 3:54 Sunday afternoon was about seven hours late.  The delay was caused by a collision between two freight trains at Hammond, in which several cars were derailed and the track torn up for considerable distance.

       At the Methodist church Sunday a collection was taken by the Sunday school for missions.  The sacrament of the Lord,s supper was administered at the morning worship, being the last service of the kind before the annual conference.  The Texas conference meets at Crockett this year.

       Elbert Holloway has been transferred by Curtis & Co. to their Hillsboro house and left for that place Sunday.

       C. W. Adams, of Hillsboro, spent Sunday in the city.  Mr. Adams is well pleased with business at that point.

       The business men of Lott have organized a commercial club and the ladies have organized a civic improvement club.  A public park is one of the immediate objects that are being sought by the organizations.

       Anthony Xydias, who has been at Albuquerque, N.M., for several months in the bakery business, has disposed of same and has returned to Marlin.

       The Business League has received a communication from the Calvert Commercial Club relative to an organized movement for securing an emergency rate on corn shipments to Texas points and it is the intention to ask for a rate of ten cents.  Thousands of cars of corn will be required to meet the demands of the farmers of the state and the question of freight rates will cut a great figure in the price.  It is estimated that it will take at least 250 cars to supply Falls county.  The Marlin Business League will co-operate fully with the other organizations of the kind in the movement.

       L. J. Davis has been confined to his room several days with fever.

       Contractor Galbraith and a force of workmen have arrived to begin the construction of Marlin's new school building.  Work will begin as soon as the ground dries sufficiently to be excavated.

       The Grand Opera House is a drawing attraction for visitors from nearby towns.  About fifty people from Kosse, Groesbeeck, Calvert, Bremond and Waco were here Saturday night to see "Her Lord and Master."  The Grand is drawing card.

       The First Baptist church has elected the following delegates to the Baptist State Convention which meets in Waco next week:  M. T. Andrews, T. J. Herron, W. D. Kyser, Mesdames, O. E. Curry, W. E. Hunnicutt, B. C. Curry.

       A reporter for the Democrat dropped in on Savas this morning and found that everything was right up to now in this justly popular place.  Savas has recently enlarged his business and now carries a stock of delicacies that lovers of something nice must see to full appreciate.  Anything from the garden, dairy, poultry farm, from the waters in the way of fish, oysters and game in season, any way any time you want them.
This new addition to the business of this hustling citizen makes his establishment an honor to the city.  In fact it would do credit to any of the larger cities of Texas.  When Savas has completed his improvements and gets his stock fully in, he will have an opening and invite the ladies of Marlin to visit and inspect his new enterprise.
       The hide and seek tea under auspices of the Ladies Social Club will take place Thursday night Nov. 13.

       The meeting at the First Baptist church closed last night.  The meeting was very successfull.

       Judge B. H. Rice and most of his family have been ill for several days.  George Carter is also quite ill.

-----

       Mr. S. H. Johnson is in receipt of several copies of Farmers' Bulletins issued by the Agricultural Department at Washington.  The bulletins are of special interest to those engaged in truck growing and parties desiring them can secure them by calling on Mr. Johnson at the Marlin Grocery Company.

       R. S. McCoy has purchased the 143 acre farm from Alf Childs south of Marlin.  Mr. McCoy will engage in farming another year.

       Lott has prospects of being a health resort itself.  Some time since Dr. M. A. Hayes had a well dug on his place and when water was struck it develped (sic) that it contained valuable medicinal properties.  The doctor had an analysis made by Prof. Harrington, of the A. & M. Col-
College (sic) at Bryan, and the analysis shows a large percentage of ingredients that are well known to be of high medicinal value.

       The Fife meeting at Rosebud has been postponed until Nov. 16, on account of the health of the evangelist, which has been poorly for some time.

       The report of the attorney general shows an unsatisfactory record of murder and convictions during the past twenty months.  The report shows that in that time 1150 murders have been committed, 699 of which have had trials in the courts, 385 being convicted.  The county of Bexar leads the list with 57, Harris county being a close second with 56, Dallas 36, El Paso 33, Nachogdoches 32, Houston (Co.) 23.  The record of Falls is 18, leading (we regret to say) all the counties of the 11th congressional district, the next highest being McLennan with 12.  Bell follows with 7, Coryell and Hamilton 3 each.

       Cards have been issued announcing the approaching nuptials Miss Myrtle Hickman to Mr. Henry Barton.  The happy event will be solemnized at 7:15 on November 12th at the residence of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Hickman at McClanahan.

       Sheriff Carlton has returned from San Antonio, where he has been for several days by special invitation assisting the officers of that city in ferretting out crooks during the fair.  Mr. Carlton speaks very highly of the courtesy and efficiency of the Alamo City officers.
