LOCALS.

       J. C. Fountain has returned from a visit to Ennis.

       Jimmie King has accepted the position of bugler in Co. D. Clark Light Guards and is now with them at Austin.  Jimmie's father, at this age, 17 years, was chief bugler at Carlisle Barracks Penn. and was also bugler for Gen. Custer.

       The Marlin Oil company is fitting up its gin at Mart for using oil in lieu of wood.  The oil station will be located near the railroad track and a pipe line will be laid from there to the gin which is about three quarters of a mile from the depot.

       Quite a number of narrow escapes from being "lightning struck" are reported since Monday afternoon.  As our local readers know a heavy bolt of thunder, a fearful flash of lightning came.  It fairly shook the heavens and startled the entire city.  It scared a team hitched to a wagon in the Cameron lumber yard and they put up a good run for a few moments.  The only damage from the runaway was the striking of a horse by the wagon tongue and while the horse was knocked down he did not seem at all injured.

       Miss Lee Shields left Thursday for an extended visit to Palestine, San Antonio, San Marcos and Austin.  Miss Shields is the sponsor for the Second Texas Regt. volunteer guards, and also for the B. C. Clark light guards, and will attend the state encampment at Austin.  Her many Marlin friends will wish for her a most pleasant visit.

       Mrs. Singer and daughter have returned from a trip to Luther, O. T. on a visit to Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Brown, and was accompanied by Mrs. Brown.

       C. T. Hunter was the purchaser of the Welle gin property and will operate it the coming season.  The plant will be overhauled and enlarged.

       C O Leuschner has purchased 900 acres of Brazos Bottom land near High Bank from Capt. Jack Roberts, the consideration being $17,000 cash.  The deal was arranged by W. A. Patrick.

       Deputy Sheriff Frank Stalls(wo)rth went to Rosebud Tuesday after two prisoners, one a white man named Cohen charged with theft of $60.00 the other a negro named Anderson, charged with a much more serious crime.

       A tour through Europe will be a very interesting entertainment at the court house Thursday night.  Many mysteries will be unfolded to the audience.  The proceeds to go the ladies' park fun.

       A Beaumont special to the Houston Post states that the Higgens Oil Company has struck a hot water flow that resembles that at Marlin and Hot Springs.  A sanitarium will be erected at once and an effort will be made to develop a health resort.

       Mrs. Arthur Stuart and son of Sonora are visiting in the city.

       W. A. Stahl, living one and a half miles eeast (sic) of town, favors the
Democrat  with a sample of nice peaches grown on his place.

       Mr. and Mrs. Dan F Bateman have returned to their at Eddy after a week's visit to Mrs. Mollie Bartlett.  Mrs. Bartlett and the boys accompanied them for a few days visit.

       Capt. Sidney Smith, Secretary and General Manager of the State Fair Association of Dallas was in Marlin when he received the news of the burning of the Exposition hall.  He left immediately for Dallas.

       Misses Beulah and Olive Stell and their mother have returned to their in Centreville after a very pleasant visit to Mr. and Mrs. George S. Cousins.

       Work was begun Tuesday by the contractor, Wm. McComb on the pavilion at Bartlett Park, under the direction of the lessees, the Ladies' Wednesday Afternoon Social club.  The pavilion will be 40x60 and will cost about $600.  The grounds of the Park will be sodded and put in good condition at once.  The park will be lighted with three arc lights and supplemented with a number of incandescents.  A tennis court, swings, croquet sets and other means of amusement will be provided.

       The Democrat has received a copy of the 1902-1903 catalog of the Lott High School, giving the course of study, rules and regulations and other valuable information about the school and about Lott.  The board of directors are composed of E. R. Hodges, J. H. English and A. F. Tomlinson.  The faculty is composed of J. F. Kennedy, principal, Miss Sudie Brewer, Mrs. Alice V. Cain, Miss Fannie Hunnicutt, Miss Ruby Flauiken, Miss Susie Atkins, in literary departments.  Miss Jennie Stevens, music; Mrs. B. F. Barret, art.  Miss Mattie Currie is principal of school No. 2.  The catalog is the product of the job department of the Lott Clarion and is neatly printed.
