LOCALS.

       The First Baptist church elected deacons Sunday as follows:--W. D. Kyser, J C Fountain, T J Herron, R S McCoy.  R E L Tomlinson was elected some time since.

       The farmers of Chilton community have organized with a view of buying corn in large lots and asking the railrods for a reduction in rate; several thousand bushels have been engaged and applications made through the local freight agent at Chilton for the rate reduction; these applications go over before the general freight agent and no doublt that the roads will do the right thing when they are satisified that the farmers alone receive the benefit.

       The commissioners court of Bell county has mapped out the first section of the Belton-Marlin air line public road.  The Belton county folk will extend this road to the Falls and Bell county line and put it in first class condition with the hope of drawing a larger portion of Falls county trade.

       Sheriff John Greer received a telegram Saturday night from Muskogee stating that one of the convicts that escaped from the Hunter farm last year had been captured.  The same convict was caught some time since at Terrell but made his escape a second time and went to the territory.

       County School Superintendent A. W. Eddins has appointed C. P. Hudson of Marlin, D. J. McWilliams, of Reagan and W. A. Holland of McClanahan, to be members of the board of teacher examiners.  The board was in session Saturday having two applicants.  One passed and one failed.

       A habeas corpus hearing before Judge Frank Boyles resulted in the discharge of Manuel Flores who was charged with criminal assault, a young Mexican married woman being the complaining witness.  The parties live near Rosebud.

       Mr. E. E. Mooty has been checked in as agent for the Waters-Pierce Oil Co. at Marlin and Mart.  He will also supply several other towns with the commodities of this company.

       John Gaines, colored, was taken into custody Monday by City Marshal Coleman on a charge of theft.  The act of theft constituted in John taking from the person of Blackman Miles an I. & G. N. pay check amounting to $34.10 while the latter slept the sleep of the innocent.  John went to Geo. McWilliams and secured $14.25 and returned fro the other later and got arrested.  John was arraigned before his honor, Judge Frazier on an examining trial and his bond was fixed at $300 in default of which he went to jail.

       Joe Eaken, trustee for the Liebrecht stock of merchandise, etc., at Dot has sold the same to Carl Zimmerman for 53 cents on the $1.00 for the accounts, all spot cash, the proceeds aggregating $3,684.50.

       Jesse Saxon, a product of old Falls, has embarked in the news paper business at Angleton, Brazora county, and is publishing "The Commoner."  Mr. Saxon possesses the energy and ability to succeed at anything he may undertake.

       The poll tax amendment recently adopted by the voters of Texas has been construed by the Attorney General to also mean that a man cannot vote in city elections unless he has paid his city poll Tax.  It is further claimed that a man cannot sit on a jury unless he has paid, because the first question asked a juror is "if he is a qualified voter in the county in which he lives." - Bryan Pilot.

       The firm of Russell & Mauer, proprietors of the Arcade, have decided to go out of business in Marlin and will move to Weatherford, Oklahoma.  They are advertising their stock of goods in these columns at very low prices.

       Hon. J. J. Swann, of Falls, who has been chosen to superintend the State Orphans' at Corsicana, is the retiring member of the State Senate for the district composed of Falls, Milam and McLennan.  He is held in high esteem by his neighbors and is well suited for the place to which he has been assigned.--Times-Herald.

       Edward H. Bowie, section director of the U. S. Weather Bureau at Galveston, has statistics showing the decrease of the cotton crop of 1901 over 1900, attributable largely to the boll weevil pest.  The decrease of the Falls county crop is placed at 13,023 bales, the production for 1901 being 48,427 bales.

       The court of criminal appeals has affirmed the cases of Jay Bowers and David Hill appealed from this county.  Bowers was given two years by the lower court on a charge of cattle theft and Hill eight years for criminal assault.

       All the jurors for the week have been excused in district court.  The non-jury docket will be taken up Thursday.

       Marlin people generally are well pleased with the list of Gov.elect Lanham's appointments.  Maj. Swann's appointment is specially interesting locally.  Among the other appointments Dr. Geo. R. Tabor, John L. Wortham, Searcy Baker, C. E. Gilbert and S J. Jenkins are of special interest to Marlin and Falls county.  C. E Gilbert, the new superintendent of buildings and grounds, is a printer and newspaper man and twenty years ago was a compositor on the Marlin Ball.  W. H. P. Hunnicutt and A.A. Peoples, appointed to responsible positions in the land office were raised in Falls county and are well known here.

       Senator Swann was in town Thursday and that Senatorial smile extended all the way from Chilton to Corsicana.  The Senator declares that Col. Lanham is making a first class governor and that his administration so far meets his unqualified approval.  The Major, as superintendent of the Orphans at Corsicana will have considerable patronage to bestow and says the he will listen attentively to all applicants and then make the best selections that can be made.
