LOCALS

       Policeman F. A. Cooley has tendered his resignation to accept a position with the Marlin Sanitarium.

       Hon. John D. McCall of Austin, is in the city.  Mr. McCall was for several years comptroller of the state and later mayor of the city of Austin.

       W. A. Patrick has sold to J. G. Leuschner the J. L. Lenoir pasture this side of Perry, comprising 1400 acres of land.  They consideration was $25,000.

       Misses Sallie and Agnes Peyton entertained a few of their friends Thursday night in honor of of (sic) Davis of Reagan.

       Mr. and Mrs. E. Peyton Lee formerly residents of this county were injured in the cyclone at Glenn Rose.  Mr. Lee is well remembered by our people here having held a county office for several years.

       The United Daughters of the Confederacy will meet Friday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock with Mrs. B. J. Linthicum instead of on Thursday, as hereafter.  All members are requested to attend.

       John G. Oltorf is booking a nice line of attractions for the opera house.  The "Captain of Jinks" company will have the opening, followed soon after by "Florodora,"  Lewis Morrison and other high class shows.
Mr. Oltorf will be on Greenwald's Theatrical circuit and will secure a nice line of attractions.

       Sam H. Anderson has been appointed a city policeman, Vice F. A. Cooley resigned, and has entered upon the duties of his office.

       E T Renfro and E F Kavanaugh have purchased the lot on corner of Coleman and Winter streets known as the Williamson lot.  The purchasers will probable erect a building thereon after awhile.

       The Confederate Veterans will hold memorial services at the graves of the departed dead on Wednesday, May 21st, at which time they will decorate the graves of the departed comrades gone before.  Senator J. J. Swann will be the orator of the day and the procession will start from the court house at 4 o'clock.

       Mr. Bob Rogers brought in a very large wolf that he had killed and says they are very numerous up about Mart.

       The Marlin cornet band furnished music for the base ball game Friday afternoon.  The band is making good progress.

       Only about ninety votes were polled for school trustees Saturday.  B. H. Rice, J. A. Dunkum and C. T. Curry were elected.

       T. J. Loughlin is taking the scholastic census of the city and requests the parents to take an inventory of their children so that the work of collection be facilitated as much as possible.

       Prof. J. Washington, principle of the colored schools has returned from a visit to Austin, where he delivered an address to a picnic given the inmates of the colored deaf and dumb asylum at Austin.

       Mrs. J. F. Allen announces as a candidate for Justice of the Peace, Precinct No. 2 in the
Democrat.

      
Mr. Branch W. Spencer of West Point, Va., is visiting his relatives, Messrs. CB and H F Spencer.
            
       Mr. L. Carreathers returned Monday night from Hillsboro, where he went to attend the funeral of his little nephew.  His wife and sister returned today.

       The rain for the past few days, is fine on corn and cotton and crops were never looking to be in better shape.  They look as if this year is to be the most properous one that this part of the country has witnessed for some time.  In some few localities corn is tasseling.

       In the mayor's court R. L. Lehman, charged with drunkeness, was fined $1 and costs.

       Mrs. F. M. Stallworth and daughter Miss May are spending the week in the city with Mrs. Peyton.

       Captain Bob Smith of Tehuacana, has let the contract for a new residence on the Ralph Rogers property in this city and work on same will begin in a few days.

       That I. & G. N. will give its annual basket picnic at Lake Thursday May 8.  Special will leave Marlin 7 a. m. and Lake at 5 p.m.  The round trip price is 75 cents.
