Thirteenth Year - Number 14
Marlin, Texas, Thursday, June 5, 1902

LOCALS.
Mr. W. Z. Burke
announces as a candidate for re-election as commissioner from precinct No. 2.
The people at Mooreville will have a great
barbecue over there on Thursday June 5th and a large number of people are
expected to be present. The congressional candidates will engage in joint
discussion.
Mr. C. F. Pringle announces in this issue
as a candidate for constable precinct No 2.
Judge Sam Streetman of Cameron is a
candidate for re-election to the Court of Civil Appeals bench to which he was
recently appointed by Governor Sayers. The people of Falls county should
remember the Judge when they go to vote on June 14. He is an able lawyer
and a splendid citizen.
Mr. Jessie Corneilson of Blue Ridge says
that he hears a good deal
about the boll weevil but he never sees any weevil. He does not take a
pessimistic view of the situation at all and believes that the weevil will not
do as much damage as some think.
The young friends of Mr. and Mrs. W. F.
Fannin were hospitably entertained last evening at their charming little in
honor of their sister Miss Hays. The feature of interest was a word
contest. Refreaments (sic) consisting of fruit, punch and cake were
served. A large crowd was present who thanked their hostess for such a
pleasant time.
Mr. J H Miller of Travis, who is in the
city reports that there has been great damage to cotton in that part of the
county, caused by the winds. The general theory is that the winds contain
electricity that burns the cotton to a crisp. The winds effect the cotton
by streaks that some times run entirely across the fields. The corn, Mr
Miller says, is beginning to suffer for want of rain.
There is a movement on foot to get up an
old fashioned barbecue at Marlin on Thursday June 12th and an effort is being
made to interest the I. & G. N. railroad in the matter to the extent of securing
the use of their park near town and reduced railroad rates on both roads.
It is proposed by the promoters that all the candidates be invited to address
the people on that occasion including the candidates for congress. It has
been a long while since Marlin had anything of this kind and if it is undertaken
it should be done on a grand scale.
The people of McClanahan, Otto and Mettina
will have a picnic at Otto on June 11th. All the candidates, including
congressional, have been invited to be on hand and tell the dear people of their
desires.
