with but little effects apparently from the weevil as yet, while in other places
considerable damage has been done.
The attendance at the Lott picnic was considerably
smaller than it would have been had the rain not interfered. However the day was
pleasantly spent by several hundred people and everything possible was done by
the Lott people that could be done to make the day pleasant. The corner stone of
their magnificent new school building was laid with imposing ceremonies by the
Masonic fraternity. A feature of the event was a speech by Congressman Robt. L.
Henry that was well received by his numerous friends in that section.
Farmers around Lott believe in diversification. Besides
large quantities of oats sold this year at good prices, a number of farmers have
received good returns from Irish potatoes. Fourteen cars of this marketable
product have been shipped from Lott this season. There are a number of farmers
owning from one to two hundred acres of land that have sold from $500 to $2000
worth of oats and are now growing other crops on the same land. One of these
farmers had decided to sell his farm and go west but after realizing such
handsome returns from diversification, he has concluded to remain where he is
and use the proceeds from his oat crop in building a nice residence for his good
wife and otherwise improving the farm.
The party of Falls county gentlemen who went to East
Texas as the guests of the I. & G. N. to inspect the fruit and vegetable
industry have returned. They found the people over there making money out of
truck farming on land that will not make over twenty bushels of corn under the
most favorable conditions. Driven to it by necessity the owners of the land are
diversifying and are prosperous and happy.
