LOCALS.

 

    FALLS COUNTY has a citizen who is an applicant for the position of Sergt-at-arms of the next house, a very important postiion and one that carries with it honor and distinction.  John R. Southwell of Lott is the man and there is not a man in Texas who is better fitted for the place.  And there is none more worthy.

    Will Dickson, a negro, was arrested by Sheriff Greer and placed in jail awaiting the arrival of the constable from Riesel.  Dickson is wanted by the Riesel officer on a charge of shooting a negro woman at that place.

    T. J. Kemper has leased his wagon yard to C. G. Capers and will devote his entire time to his farm west of the river after January first.

    Another party of negroes left Friday night for the territory.  They go to Okomulgee.

    The remains of Miss Maude McDonald were intered (sic) at the city cemetery at 11 o'clock today, the funeral taking place from the residence of Mr. and Mrs. T. K. Barton.  The death of this estimable young lady is indeed a very sad one.

    J. H. Davis, of Mooreville, was here Friday.  He states that he will work his farm another year with hired labor in preference to tenants.  His experience this year like that of many others has been very expensive and he expects the change to be for the better.

    The hackmen, hotel and bath house solicitors have entered an agreement that they will meet no trains after 7:15 Wednesday night until Friday morning, account Christmas.  A penalty has been agreed on for the offense of violating it.  Hackmen may take persons te (sic) the train upon call, but they are forbidden by the articles of agreement to haul passengers from the trains.

    Mr. James McDonald and Mr. and Mrs. Geo. G. McDonald of Gilmer were here to attend the funeral of Miss Maude McDonald George is engaged in the mercantile business at Gilmer and is the vice president of the company.

    Miss Elen Gardner has returned from west Texas where she has been for the benefit of her health.

    W. P. Vinson, who has resided near Marlin for a number of years has moved to Kosse.

    Mr. L. M. Hart, of Gonzales county, who is on a visit to his brother, S. G. Hart, who lives west of the river, was in the city Friday.  Mr. Hart says that the people in that part of the state have quit talking about the boll weevil, which has been in that country for several years.  The pest no longer give them any great worry.  By planting early and careful cultivation they make a fair crop.  Some farmers make a half to three fourths of a bale despite the boll weevil.  He takes a very cheerful view of the situation and thinks that the farmers of this section of the state will learn in a year or two to do the same.

    Otey McKnight of the A. and M. college is here to spend Christmas.

    Mr. C. C. Morris and the children are here from Waco.  The family expects to return to Marlin where they will reside.  It is understood that Mr. Morris will engage in business here.
