LOCALS.


       Agent G. M. Herring has received a memorandum from the general office of the H & T C Railway showing that 541 excursion tickets were sold in Marlin during street fair week.  A notable fact is that tickets were sold to Marlin from every station coveered (sic) by the excursion rates, which was from Millican to Corsicana inclusive.  This demonstrates the value of advertising when properly done.

       Dr. E. V. Hawes, of Sterling City, and Mrs. E. A. Rigby, of Rosebud, were married at the latter place.  It is said they were lovers when young, but became estranged and each married another.  By chance they met last summer and the old, old story is repeated.

       Mr. Arch Lamb stated in the Democrat that he would decline the endorsement of the republican precinct convention for commissioner of this precinct. (Missing) am not in politics and am not studying politics," said Mr. Lamb.

       A primary election has been ordered in justice precinct No. 4 for October 11 to nominate a candidate for constable of that precinct, J. U. Ritchel, the nominee having declined to run.  The boxes in the precinct are as follows:  Stallsworth store, Lott, Westphalia, Durango and Bell Falls.

       Sub-hose station No. 2, has been established near the residence of J. C. Fountain.  There is considerable rivalry now between the members of the hose companies as to which is capable of the quickest speed in coupling the hose.  A test run will be made this afternoon at 5:30 o'clock between B. C. Curry of sub No. 1 and Henry Humphrey of Central station.

       W. A. Powell has received a letter from Plainview annoucing the death of his brother-in-law, Mr. Bryant.  Deceased is a brother of J. W. Bryant, of Chilton, and formerly resided in this county, leaving here in 1883.

       Permits to wed have been granted to D. W. Bowie and C. L. Farr; S. L. Tooley and Lorena Green, since Oct. 1.

       Miss Mary Hammer has gone to Chilton where she is teaching in the school at that place.

       Messrs. L. E. Oltorf and D. R. Emerson will open a meat market in one of the Allen brick houses on Live Oak street in a few days.

       The Democrat has received a copy of the catalogue of the Dublin  City Schools with the compliments of Prof. E. J. Hall, the superintendent, who formerly held a similar position at Marlin.  The schools there show evidences of continuous progress.

       W. L. Falconer reports that the worms are destroying his Johnson grass.  Within the last few days millions of them have made their appearance and are at work upon the blades of the grass.  J. B. Jones reports a similar attack upon this meadow.

       The Riesel Rustler is mad because the Marlin Street Fair was not conducted as the Rustler thinks it ought to have been.  It will probably be good policy to make the Rustler man a member of the executive committee of the next one held.

       Col. Henry Watterson has stirred up a hornet's nest by attacking the moral status of the "400."

       Mrs. Seth Mooring has returned to Bryan after a visit to Marlin.

       In the eyes of some President Roosevelt has committeed an unpardonable sin in recommending Arch Bishop Ireland to the Pope for a cardinal.

       Dan M. Jackson and wife and Dan M. Jr., of Houston, arrived Sunday for a short visit.

       County Attorney Frank Boyles went to Kosse Saturday where he conducted services Sunday at the Methodist church for Rev. Burroughs.

       Col. Walter S. Baker, of Waco, was in the city Saturday.  Col. Baker was for several weeks last spring a resident of Marlin and is a welcome visitor to the hot water town.

       A meeting of the executive committee of the Brazos River Association has been called for Brenham at 1:30 October 11.

       There is some complaint from the west side of crop jumping by tenents who have the Oklahoma fever.

       R. J. McKinney is suffering from a very ugly bruise made on the fore part of his leg several days ago.  He was cutting stove wood when a piece was driven against his leg with such force as to effect the bone. The limb was swollen very badly and this morning an operation was performed which relieved it very much.

       Savas Xydias has secured control of the building formerly occupied by Jack Sevier's barber shop and adjoining the Savas Cafe.  He is making an opening in the wall and will fit up the building and carry fresh vegetables, dressed fowls, and many delicacies.  It will be something that Marlin has never had and will no doubt be appreciated by a liberal patronage.

       Nesdames H. Olenusch and Emma Parker, of Waco, are visiting friends in the city.

       Mr. H. R. Irwin, the new division superintendent of the I. & G. N. railway, has taken charge.  Capt. Harris, the retiring superintendent, say that he will take a good long rest.  He has been with the I. & G. N. for twenty five years, during which he has filled many positions with eminent satisfaction to the company as has been evidenced by his continued promotions.

       G. W. Buchanan has severed his connections with the Beal & Ozier livery stable and moved to Marlin.--Rosebud News.

       The farmers of Falls county, profiting by past experiences, should plant early another year so that the crop will mature earlier, if possible ahead of the pests and the drouths.

       Monday Oct. 6 was German day and the German-Americans of the city celebrated the event with a grand ball at night at the Sons of Herman Hall.

Curtis & Co. advertise their Mill Remnant Sale today.  They have an interesting line of prices to offer the people.

       E. W. Schneider, former commissioner of this precinct was in Marlin Wednesday and was a pleasant caller at the Democrat office.  Mr. Schneider says that the cotton crop (h)as about been gathered in this (sec)tion of the county.

        Jesse Collin announces in this issue as a candidate for constable of precinct No. 6.

       Hodges Dry Good Company have an advertisement in today's paper that should interest the people of Falls county, the ladies especially, who are looking for bargains.
