Joseph Tecumseh Windham, b December 31, 1859 in Louisiana d January 29, 1918 at
New Salem, Falls County, Texas and buried in Clover Hill Cemetery at Lott-was
married in Madison County May 6, 1888 to Julia Tump Lewis, b October 20, 1870, d
November 22, 1922 and buried in Clover Hill Cemetery at Lott.
In 1906, Joe and Julia brought their family to Falls County in a covered wagon,
leading three milk cows. They camped along the way, taking about a week to make
the trip. On arriving in Falls County, The Windhams stopped at the Finks farm
near the Falls of the Brazos River, living there for five years. Their children
picked cotton for twenty-five cents per hundred pounds in the Brazos River
Bottom in 1907, and they started school at Shields Academy, where the teacher
was Miss Ada Grisham.
Joseph T. Windham moved his family to New Salem in 1911. The nine children of
Joe and Julia Windham were:
Thomas Eugene Windham, b December 9, 1889 in Madison County, Texas, d
1982-married Mrs. Ada (Reynolds) Bone, and had no children.
George Aaron Windham, b October 21, 1891, d 1982-was a farmer in Falls County,
Texas.
Mary Pearl Windham, b February 17, 1894, d 1973-married Sam Williams and had two
children.
Joe Hardin Windham, b March 5, 1896, d 1954, was in the military service during
World War I-married Della Mae Crites and had Betty Jo Windham, and moved to
California.
Maude Viola Windham, b July 24, 1898, died in Madison County, Texas during
childhood.
John Lewis Windham, b November 7, 1900 in Madison County, Texas-married Lu Etta
Bone and had five children.
Claude McCoy Windham, b June 10, 1903 in Madison County Texas, married first
Ruby (Sparks) Wheeler and had two children; married second Minnie Wilson ;and
had four children.
Carl Windham, b February 10, 1905 Falls County, married Phennie Hope Bouchillon
and had three children; married second mary Lee (Rasco) Upchurch and had no
children.
Reuben Ray Windham, b May 9, 1911 in Falls County, d 1982, married Clara
Ledbetter, and had no children.
