Major Calvin Whiteside, b July 9, 1851 in Lee County, Mississippi, d August 9, 1923 and buried in Phillips Cemetery at Travis, Falls County, Texas-was the youngest of nine children of Major Whiteside, b 1812 in York County, South Carolina who was married ca 1836 in South Carolina to Ann Robinson, b 1814 in South Carolina. The family moved to Mississippi about 1847 via Tennessee, where their seventh child was born. In 1850, the family was living in Itawamba County, Mississippi, where Major declared a $3,000.00 estate. Major Calvin Whiteside's siblings were: Mary I., Thomas, John R., Jane Catherine, Samuel, Sarah I., James R., and Ann E. Whiteside.
Major Calvin Whiteside was married ca 1872 in Lee County, Mississippi to Mary Middlebrook Bridges, b January 12, 1853 in Harris County, Georgia.
In the 1890's, Calvin moved his family of ten children to Falls County, Texas, where-in 1895-he purchased fifty acres of land in the Samuel Gregg survey near Travis. He farmed and operated a grocery store at Travis until his death.
Their children included:
Caroline Whiteside, called "Callie", b 1873 in Mississippi, d 1911, married John Franklin Cooley and had two sons: J. C. and Hoyle Cooley.
Margaret Ella Whiteside, b 1875 in Mississippi, d 1950, married James Sylvester Lamar and had J. S. Lamar and Lorraine Lamar who married Odis Petsick.
Lurah Dorinda Whiteside, b 1878 Lee County, Mississippi, d March 3, 1959 in Denton, married July 30, 1901 at Travis to James Bayliss Buck, b March 30, 1875 Montgomery County, Tennessee, d June 16, 1959, Denton, both buried in Roselawn Memorial Park. James had come to Falls County in 1899, purchasing a hundred acres of land near Travis on November 14, 1904. Lurah had taught school for five years-three years with Rhoda Darden at Travis, one year at Jena, and one year at Knob in Milam County. They had two daughters: Reba Buck, b July 10, 1902, Texas, was educated at Texas Woman's University in Denton where the parents had moved in 1919. She married Hubert Johnson who became Superintendent of the Waco Methodist Home, and they lived in Waco until his retirement. The second daughter of James and Lurah was Vita Buck, who received her degree at Texas Woman's University and married Paul Hamilton.
Henry Clinton Whiteside, b 1880 Mississippi, d 1927, married Laura Oma Asbury and had Ailene Whiteside who married February 3, 1939 to L. F. Rhodes, and Willia Burl Whiteside.
Della Whiteside, b 1882 in Mississippi, d 1964 in Falls County, married June 13, 1905 to George Hamilton Storey. They reared "Callie's" two children, J. C. and Hoyle Cooley.
Grover Cleveland Whiteside, b 1884, Mississippi, d 1952, married Jimmie Hightower and had Paul and Dan Jennings Whiteside.
Flossie Myrtle, b 1890, d 1966, married Della's widower, George Hamilton Storey.
Roy Augustus Whiteside, b 1893, d 1977, married Adeline Ferguson and had Mary Jo (Whiteside) Thornton, Evelyn (Whiteside) McDaniel, and John Richard Whiteside.
Joseph Calvin Whiteside, b 1896 Falls County, d 1972, married first Hazel Smith Tolbert and had Zula Whiteside; married second Dorothy Mae Smith of Hunt County, and had two sons: Joseph Calvin, Jr. who married and had Dan Whiteside; and Claude who married Ima Jeane Murray of Big Spring and had David Whiteside. When Claude and Ima were divorced, David lived with his uncle, Joseph Calvin, Jr., who was a merchant at Blue Ridge, Marlin, and Rosebud.
