JOHN EDWIN SUDBURY

 

 

 

John Edwin Sudbury, b February 7, 1883 at Rockdale, Milam County, Texas, d December 9, 1955 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas ‑ was a son of Robert Roy and Lara (Foster) Sudbury, natives of Tennessee.

On January 22, 1905 in Milam County, Texas, John Edwin Sudbury was married to Annie Elizabeth Collins, b April 9, 1887, d September 5, 1971 in Marlin. In 1913, the couple moved to Marlin, where they engaged in the Dairy and Orchard business for twentyfive years. The family lived on Nettles Street, where Annie Elizabeth continued to live after her husband died.

The six children of John Edwin and Annie Elizabeth (Collins) Sudbury were all educated in the Marlin Public Schools, participating in athletics, Boy Scouts, and other community affairs, and were:

Earl Edwin Sudbury, b November 10, 1906, d June 26, 1973 in El Paso, Texas ‑married August 30, 1927 to Lena Bell Young. They had Earl Edwin Sudbury, Jr.; Darlene Sudbury; and Thomas Sudbury.

Homer David Sudbury, b March 1, 1910 in Milam County, Texas, d February 10, 1979 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas ‑ married Ruby Tacker ‑ a native of the McClanahan Community of Falls County. They lived in Waco, Texas, and had: David Sudbury, Ronda Sudbury, Wanda Sudbury, and Frances Sudbury. Ruby

still lives in Waco.

Robert Lee Sudbury, b September 24, 1912 in Milam County, Texas, d June 10, 1980 in Marlin married in April 1938 to Sibyl Davis, of Calvert, Texas. Sibyl was a nurse in Marlin until her retirement, and continues to reside there. They had Barbara Sudbury, Linda Sudbury, and Robert Lee Sudbury, Jr.

Flora Sudbury, b November 10, 1913 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas ‑ married in September 1937 to Charles Joe Boyd. They live in Jacksonville, Texas, and had: Charles Joe Boyd, Jr.; and Glen Weldon Boyd.

Carl Allen Sudbury, b September 1919 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas ‑ was a star on the 1935‑1936 football team at Marlin High School, along with Guy Garrett, Jr., and Leonard Brown. He was also a member of Bishop F. P. Goddard's Boy Scout Troop, which collected the arrowheads donated to the Falls County Historical Museum. Carl enlisted in the U.S. Army in March 1941, and served in Scotland, England, France, Germany, and Czechoslovakia ‑ being awarded the American Defense Ribbon, ATO, ETO, five Battle Stars, Bronze Star, one cluster, the Good Conduct Medal, and Presidential Citation. He retired with the rank of Captain. In February 1947, Carl was married to Vaudean Steede, and the couple moved to Houston, where he was a retail furniture decorator. They had four daughters: Sharon Sudbury, who married Phil Staley and had Kimberley and Courtney Staley; Carla Sudbury; Martha Sudbury who married Henry Mayer; and Diana Sudbury who married Eddie Ender, and had Ty Ender. Carl and Vaudean are retired, and reside in Conroe, Texas.

Dorothy Aline Sudbury, b July 9, 1925 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas ‑ married Walter J. Hemer, b August 1921, d October 1984 in Dallas, Texas. They had Robert William Hemer.
