THOMAS LEWIS SAXON

 

 

 

     Thomas Lewis Saxon, b May 8, 1841 in Monroe County, Mississippi, d March 23, 1882 in Falls County, Texas and buried in Blue Ridge Cemetery ‑ was a son of Pleasant and Ethelinda (Franks) Saxon ‑ natives of Laurens District, South Carolina, who moved to Monroe County, Mississippi, where they both died in 1841 ‑ leaving their five children orphans. They were returned to South Carolina to live with their grandparents, but in 1854, they had all moved together to Texas and settled in Falls County.

     On September 5, 1861 in Galveston, Texas, Thomas Lewis enlisted in the Confederate States Army and served as a Private in Company E, 2nd Texas Infantry. On the roll of the company for the months of January and February, 1863, Thomas Lewis Saxon was reported "transferred, permanently detached at Quitman Hospital by order of General Pemberton."

     Thomas settled in Falls County, but he married in Montgomery County, Texas on August 9, 1866 to Elizabeth Millerman (called "Eliza"), b June 9, 1845 in Montgomery County, Texas, d January 6, 1901 in Falls County, and buried in Blue Ridge Cemetery by her husband ‑ a daughter of John Sanford and Mary (Harlan) Millerman who had settled in Falls County in 1856.

     Thomas L. and Eliza Saxon were the parents of eight children:

     Jesse Walter Saxon, b July 30, 1867 in Falls County, Texas, d March 16, 1957 in Austin, Travis County, Texas and buried there ‑ married December 30, 1896 in Falls County to Hannah Williams, b April 22, 1873 in Falls County, Texas, d December 30, 1966 in Austin, Travis County, Texas and buried there by her husband ‑ a daughter of Jehu Williams and his second wife, Amanda Frances (McDowell‑Herring) Williams who came to Texas from Morgan County, Alabama in 1869, settling in Falls County.

     John Pleasant Saxon, b February 18, 1869 in Falls County, Texas, d February 11, 1948 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas and buried in Calvary Cemetery in Marlin ‑married December 29, 1895 at Blue Ridge, Falls County, Texas to Lida Woodland, b March 28, 1875 in Falls County, d May 4, 1958 ‑ a daughter of Henry and Lucinda (Barclay‑Menefee) Woodland.

     Mary Ettie Saxon, b November 24, 1870 in Falls County, Texas, d March 23, 1948 in Graham, Young

County, Texas and buried in Loving Cemetery there married in Falls County on November 26, 1885 to Carter James Harlan (no relationship found), who died December 20, 1932 in Young County, and buried in Loving Cemetery. They were the parents of fourteen children: Thomas Leonard, Nathan Chrismon, Reese Henry, Avery, Homer Hays, Nettie May, Eliza, John Edward, Mack Browning, Jesse James, Alice Lattimore, Blanche Ruth, Mary Ella, and Mertie Hazel Harlan ‑ eight died unmarried (five as infants or tots), and only the youngest five children are living in 1986.

     Blanch Aliston Saxon, b February 2, 1873 in Falls County, Texas, d in 1956 in Dallas County, Texas and buried in Blue Ridge Cemetery in Falls County‑married first in Falls County on May 24, 1891 to Wilbur Randal Steede, b September 17, 1871 in Montgomery County, Texas, d in 1900 in Marlin, Texas and buried in Blue Ridge Cemetery. Blanch married second in Falls County on November 24, 1901 to Charles Washington Jennings, b March 8, 1856 in Falls County, d April 15, 1916 and also buried in Blue Ridge Cemetery, although Blanch was buried by her first husband, by whom she had four children. She had four children by her second husband also.

     Samantha Saxon, b April 14, 1875 in Falls County, Texas, d there June 3, 1875, and buried in Blue Ridge Cemetery.

Samuel Sanford Saxon, b July 10, 1877 in Falls County, Texas, d December 26, 1967 in Waco, McLennan County, Texas and buried in Oakwood Cemetery, married on December 24, 1902 in Waco to Addie Lee Saxon, b December 21, 1879 in Moody, McLennan County, d October 4, 1927 in Waco and buried in Oakwood Cemetery ‑ a daughter of Thomas Henry and Penelope Ann (Davis) Saxon. They were the parents of three children: Loraine Quinn, Blanche Lee, and Nepanna Louise Saxon ‑ all born in Waco, McLennan County, Texas. Samuel Sanford Saxon married second on January 10,1932 in Waco to Jessie Bryan Tucker, b August 19, 1888 in Holly Springs, Marshall County, Mississippi; d December 31, 1950 in Waco, and buried in Oakwood Cemetery. By this marriage, there were no children.

     Infant Son Saxon, b & d July 23, 1880 in Falls County, Texas ‑ and buried in Blue Ridge Cemetery.

     Tommie L. Saxon‑a little daughter b August 15, 1882 after the death of her father, d February 17, 1883, and buried in Blue Ridge Cemetery.

     Thomas Lewis Saxon was a farmer and carpenter, and he and his wife were members of the Methodist Church.
