HENRY DAVID RUSH

 

 

     Henry David Rush, b August 10, 1902 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas, d April 10, 1982 in Marlin and buried in Calvary Cemetery there - was a son of Charles Wesley and Hinda (de Graffenried) Rush, I.

     On September 17, 1927 in Marlin, Texas, Henry David married Octavia Lillian Allen, b December 3, 1903 in Marlin - a daughter of Lea Ernest and Irene Irma (Jones) Allen, and they were the parents of three children - only two surviving infancy:

     Irene Irma Rush, b December 21, 1932 in Marlin Falls County, Texas - married February 3, 1951 to Dick Gordon Garrett and had four children: David Gayle, Lynn, and Lea Garrett. Irene and Gordon were divorced June 28, 1982, and Irene now resides in Marlin, where she is District Court Coordinator.

     Infant Rush, b June 22, 1938 in Marlin, Texas, June 24, 1938 - was not named.

     Charles Wesley Rush, III, b December 25, 1939 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas - married first to Wanda Wray; married second on April 6, 1968 in Wurzburg West Germany to Cynthia Olive Gerwig, and has two children: Trevor Rush, b 1970; and Jason Rush, b 1974

     Henry David Rush was educated at Texas A&M University and Eastman Business College of Poughkeepsie, New York. In 1931, he joined his father in the family business of Rush, Gardner, and Bartlett – a retail hardware, furniture, and appliance firm that was closely associated with the development of Marlin for its inception in 1891. He served as the firm's vice president until 1949, and was president and general manager until his retirement in 1967. He also served as s president of the Texas Hardware and Implement Association.

     In 1942, Henry David Rush was cited by the U.S War Department for patriotic working during World War II. He was Senior Warden of St. John's Episcopal Church during 1936 and 1937; was a charter member of the Rotary Club, and active in many Marlin and Falls County organizations.

     Octavia Lillian (Allen) Rush continues to reside in Marlin.
