PHILLIP RADLE

 

 

     Phillip Radle, b 1841 in Germany, died in Falls County, Texas and buried in Cedar Springs Cemetery (no tombstone) -was a son of Martin Radle, b 1811, d October 1871 in Germany, who married in 1835 to Julia Yager - a daughter of Adolph and Crecent (Falbacher) Yager. Phillip, the fourth of seventeen children, served in the German Army as a Sergeant during the German-Austrian War of 1866, where he was wounded in the knee. In 1867, he came to America - landing in New York, and worked his way to Washing- ton, Indiana, thence to New Orleans, and finally to Texas in 1868. He worked in Harris County for two years, and after living in Grimes County, where some of his children were born, he settled his family in Falls County, Texas in 1876.

     In 1870, Phillip was married to Amelia Metser - a native of Texas and daughter of David and Mary (Shilling) Metser, who immigrated to America in 1848. Amelia survived Phillip by many years, and died and was buried in Waco, McLennan County, Texas (date unknown).

     When Phillip and Amelia (Metser) Radle brought their family to Falls County in 1876, they first rented land in southern Falls County (in the area of Cedar Springs) - purchasing their own farm in 1881. They reared eight of thirteen children, and the survivors were:

     Christian Theodore Radle, September 30, 1873 in Grimes County, Texas, d May 28, 1937 and buried in St. John's United Church of Christ Cemetery near Otto, Texas - married Margaretha J. Vogel, b August 29,1873, d March 30, 1951 and buried by her husband. They had eleven children.

     George F. Radle - said to be buried in St. John's Church of Christ Cemetery (no tombstone found) - married in Falls County, Texas on January 2, 1906 to Mary Schmid. They had nine children: Hattie Radle, b September 14, 1906 in Travis, who married Henry Schrader; George Radle (called "Jim"), b July 5, 1909 in Travis (although Falls County Birth Records gave birth as July 23, 1909); Jess Radle, b August 5, 1911 at Travis; Clara Agnes Radle, b August 17, 1913, who married Major Glenn Coleman (called "Cooter"), b October 9, 1909, d October 21, 1969 and buried in Hillcrest Cemetery at Marlin; Charlie E. Radle, b July 9, 1915 at Durango; William Radle (called "Bill"), b ca 1918; Katie Radle, b October 12, 1920, who married a Mr. Neumann (or Newman); Mary Radle, b ca 1923, who married Melvin Keith Hicks (called "Mutt"); and Herman David Radle, b July 26, 1925 at Lorena, Texas.

     Herman Radle - a twin, who married in Falls County, Texas on May 11, 1908 to Corrie Schmid. No further information.

Bertha Poadle - a twin, who married in Falls County, Texas on April 30, 1906 to Ben Boedecker. No further information.

     Willie Radle, who married in Falls County, Texas on June 29, 1907 to Ira Ellis. No further information.

     Charlie Radle - no information.

     Fritz Radle - no information.

     Katherine Radle (called "Katie") - no information.

     Phillip owned 156 acres of land, and a gin. He served as Falls County Commissioner in 1892, was a member of the Knights of Pythias, Knights of Herman, and the A.O.V.W. His family were members of the Catholic Church.

     There have been Radle descendants in Falls County for 110 years, with most residing in the Otto, Marlin, and Chilton communities in 1986.
