CHARLES LAVACA NEAL

 

 

     Charles Lavaca Neal, b August 19, 1867 in Houston, Chickasaw County, Mississippi, d April 29, 1937 in Temple, Bell County, Texas and buried in Clover Hill Cemetery at Lott - was a son of Harrod Russell Neal and Susan (Davis) Neal. Charles married ca 1885 to Anna Lisa Porter, b November 20, 1867 in Chickasaw County, Mississippi, d November 24, 1947 - a daughter of John and Mary Ann (Davis) Porter.

     In 1893, Charles and his family moved by train to Rockdale, Milam County, where he rented land from Dr. A. Conn Isaacs. Realizing that he needed a larger farm to support his growing family, he asked Dr. Isaacs for his advice. Dr. Isaacs recommended Charles to Mr. Paul Pieper of Barclay in Falls County, and he was able to lease 100 acres of land to farm cotton and corn in 1899.

     The Neal family attended the Beulah Baptist Church at Barclay. Later they moved to the Sneed Ranch west of Rosebud. Most of the children matured and married at this farm.

     In 1922, Charles and Anna Lisa, with their youngest daughter, Mary, moved to Temple, Bell County, Texas, where he worked for Mr. Hugh Harris, who owned a nursery. They returned to Falls County in 1928; but in 1933, because of poor health, they moved back to Temple to live with a daughter, Jessie (Neal) Spradley, until their deaths. Anna Lisa lived ten years after Charles died.

     Charles Lavaca and Anna Lisa (Porter) Neal had seven children, who all attended the Kasner School:

     Ira Cooper Neal, b July 21, 1886 in Mississippi, d August 8, 1958 in Temple - married December 5, 1909 to Nellie May Gibbs, b May 25,1883 in Milam County, Texas, d April 6, 1969 in Temple, Texas - a daughter of James Henry and Sarah Frances (Talley) Gibbs. Their children were Charles Lamoine Neal, b January 7, 1911 at Rosebud, d February 18, 1982 in Temple, who married first to Oneta Ingram and had a son, Jack, who died unmarried, and married second to Ina Mae Morton and had Sylvia Jean Neal, and Larry Allen Neal. Their second child was Beauford Connally Neal, b September 17, 1916 in Rosebud who married in Temple, Texas to Mary Janice Sinclair, and they had Mack Connally Neal and Mary Claire Neal.

     James Milam Neal, b July 21, 1886 in Mississippi, d March 9, 1978 - married February 13, 1910 to Nora Mae Manning.

     John Porter Neal, b February 20, 1892 in Mississippi, d September 1939 - married in 1913 to Elizabeth Canipe.

     Carl Beauford Neal, b September 10, 1895 at Rockdale, Milam County, Texas, d 1985 in Lott, Falls County, Texas-married in 1921 to Lura Sudduth.

     Lottie Irene Neal, b November 20, 1898 at Rock- dale, Milam County, Texas married 1921 to Henry Hedrick.

     Jessie Millard Neal, b April 4, 1904 at Rosebud, Falls County, Texas - married Richard John Spradley.

     Mary Sidney Neal, b March 4, 1907 in Rosebud, Falls County, Texas - married first in 1925 to Charles Honeycutt, and married second in 1931 to John Thomas Potts.

     The daughter-in-law of Charles Lavaca and Anna Lisa (Porter) Neal, Lura (Sudduth) who married their son, Carl Beauford Neal, taught school at Hamilton in Falls County, Texas for many years.
