ROBERT WASHINGTON MARTIN

 

Robert Washington Martin, b 1823 in Georgia, d 1866 in Falls County, Texas and buried in Mooreville Cemetery ‑ was married ca 1843 in Mississippi to Elizabeth Smart, b May 1, 1827 in Mississippi, d May 18, 1901 in Waco and buried in Mooreville Cemetery. Robert served in the Confederate States Army in First Regiment, Louisiana Cavalry, during the entire war, leaving his wife with nine of their ten children to sup­port. They had moved into Texas earlier, but crossed back over the Sabine River, settling in Louisiana in 1844.

Robert was a member of a Masonic Lodge in New Orleans. Elizabeth had her valuables and smoked meat buried in the garden because of Jay‑Hawkers, who bothered them during the war. When Robert re­turned after the war ended, the family of nine children immigrated to the Mooreville area of Falls County in 1865, where Robert died soon after their ar­rival.

The children of Robert and Elizabeth were:

Susan Martin, b June 30, 1844 in Louisiana, d 1939 in Falls County, Texas‑married ca 1867 to Wil­lis Turner Wiggins, b February 20, 1841 in Mississippi, d December 30, 1930. Willis was a veteran of the Con­federate States Army, and the couple were very active in the Old Settlers and Veterans Association at Tom­linson Hill.

Nathan Martin, b ca 1848 in Louisiana.

William Martin, b ca 1849 in Louisiana.

Lewis Martin, b ca 1851 in Louisiana.

Mary A. Martin, b 1853 in Louisiana married Jan­uary 26, 1871 in Falls County, Texas to Enoch Talton Wiggins, b March 30, 1846 in Mississippi.

Willis Martin, b 1855 in Louisiana. Martin Martin, b 1857 in Louisiana.

Elizabeth Martin, b 1859 in Louisiana. Robert Martin, b 1862 in Louisiana.

James Martin, b 1866 in Falls County, Texas.
