BENJAMIN MAYWOOD LOCKERD

 

     Benjamin Maywood Lockerd was born January 17,1848 in Murray County, Georgia, the son of Francis Lockard and his wife, the former Malinda Jane Robertson, both natives of Tennessee. The surname of LOCKARD takes many spellings; however, it has been consistently spelled with an "E" by Benjamin M. Lockerd and his descendants. He died near Mooreville, Texas, February 11, 1895, and is buried in the cemetery there. It is not known exactly when he came to Texas but a brother, Joseph Taylor Lockard, accompanied him, both riding horseback according to family tradition. On January 1, 1874, Benjamin M. Lockerd married Amanda Ellen Maxey at Mooreville with Capt. Ed McCullough officiating. She was born December 5, 1856 at Curruth Springs in Falls County, daughter of  Newton Bennett and Susan A. (Wethers) Maxey, the 1 former a native of Kentucky and the latter of Indiana. 1 The Lockerds farmed in the Dot community, near Mooreville, and after his death his widow moved to Chilton, Texas. There, she made her with a daughter, Susan E. Miles, until she died September 20, 1941. She; is buried in the cemetery in Chilton. Eight children were born to this union, all in the Dot community:

     1. Ida L. Lockerd, born January 21, 1875 and died October 8, 1875. She is buried beside her father at Mooreville.

     2. Bernettie Lockerd, born April 30, 1876, and died November 18, 1940. On October 22, 1895, she married William Daffin Lane, who was born February 23, 1873 and died January 2,1939. He was a farmer, and owned a business in Chilton where they made their home. They had two daughters: Edna and Edith Lane.

     3. James Robertson Lockerd, born November 4, 1877 and died November 7,1953. On January 15, 1902, he married Joie Clara Carter, who was born October 11, 1879 and died February 9, 1957. They lived in Hillsboro, Texas and had two sons: Ben Carter and James F. Lockerd.

     4. Margaret (Maggie) Edna Lockerd, born October 13, 1879 and died July 10, 1963. On April 25, 1897, she married Joseph (Joe) Cicero Eakin, born September 5, 1871 and died December 20, 1949. He was a farmer, and served as postmaster in Chilton, Texas for a number of years, where they made their home. Politically, he was a Republican and represented the State Party at several national meetings. There were five children: Merlin Maywood, Joe Cecil, Gladys Isabell, Aldean Aaron and Daniel Edwin Eakin.

     5. Martha Jane Lockerd, born April 7, 1881 and died September 17, 1972. On July 30, 1899, she married Thomas Jefferson Weeks, who was born May 7, 1879 and died October 27, 1967. They lived in Chilton, and had one son: Thomas Lockerd Weeks.

     6. Susan Ethel Lockerd, born June 2, 1884 and died December 14, 1950. She married William Arthur Miles, January 1, 1901, who was born May 27, 1883 and died May 4, 1928. He was a law enforcement officer in several cities during the oil-boom days of Texas including Mexia. They had no children.

     7. Elizabeth Lee Lockerd, born December 12, 1886 and died March 6, 1977. On April 22, 1908, she married Joe Lewis Allen, born June 1, 1884 and died November 15, 1960. He was associated with the railroads and they made their in Mart, Texas for a number of years before moving to Scurry, Texas. They had two sons: Bennie Wilson and Joe Lee Allen.

     8. Newton Francis Lockerd, born June 15, 1891 and died on January 23, 1982. He married (1) Bessie Eoline Brewer, March 7,1916. She was born June 2, 1891 and died January 3, 1962. He married (2) Mrs. Norma (Clawson) Everett, November 7, 1964. No issue by either wife. He was associated with a bank in Bryan, Texas where he made his for a number of years.
