CICERO LUTHER KIRKSCEY, M. D.

 

     Cicero Luther Kirkscey, M.D., b December 2,1836 in Alamucha, Lauderdale County, Mississippi, d September 6, 1904 in Lott, Falls County, Texas and buried (in Clover Hill Cemetery in Lott, - was a son of John Madison Columbus and Martha (Thompson) Kirkscey.  Soon after the birth of Cicero Luther, the family moved (to Butler, Choctaw County, Alabama, where he grew up and married on October 3, 1866 to Mary P. Grace, b October 15, 1845 in Choctaw County, Alabama, d December 5, 1922 in Lott, Falls County, Texas and buried by her husband - the daughter of Green Berry and ( Ann Jane (Johnson) Grace.  

     Dr. Kirkscey served in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War, and was wounded at White Oak Swamp. In 1868, he was admitted to the Mobile] Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, as a Deacon. He served as a Methodist minister until (he entered Atlanta Medical College - graduating in 1874, and moving his family to Dover, Pope County, Arkansas to begin his medical practice. In 1901, the family relocated in Lott, Falls County, Texas, where he started a new medical practice.

     Dr. and Mrs. Kirkscey were the parents of four sons:  

     Foster G. Kirkscey, M.D., b May 25,1868 in Madison, Lauderdale County, Mississippi, d September 14, 1898 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois - married December 24, 1888 in Athens, Henderson County, Texas to Addie L. Deupree, b there February 22, 1868, d there February 17, 1892 - a daughter of William Thomas and Amarintha Louisa (Ware) Deupree. Dr. Foster Kirkscey was buried in Tyler, Smith County, Texas and Addie L. Deupree Kirkscey was buried in Athens, Henderson County, Texas. They had only one son: Thomas Cicero Kirkscey, b January 11,1892 in Athens, Texas - married December 31, 1909 in Yell, Arkansas to Bernice Barnett, and returned to Falls County, Texas to make their home. Dr. Foster G. Kirkscey married second on December 23, 1894 to Irene Human. He was a member of the Methodist denomination.

     The other three sons spelled the name "Kirksey": Madison Cicero Kirksey, M.D., b December 2, 1869 in Meridian, Lauderdale County, Mississippi, d January 16, 1938 in Yell County, Arkansas and buried in Dallas, Dallas County, Texas - married March 31, 1899 in Yell County, Arkansas to Fidelia E. Barnett.

     Robert J. Kirksey, b February 20, 1872 in Shelby County, Arkansas - became a teacher. No further information.

     Woodville J. Kirksey, b January 20, 1874 in Shelby County, Arkansas, d March 26, 1964 in Belfalls, Bell County, Texas and buried in Clover Hill Cemetery at Lott, Falls County, Texas - married Geneva Foe, b March 13, 1875, d June 27, 1968 and buried by her husband.
