JOHN WESLEY JACKSON II

 

SURNAMES: JACKSON, HILL, HALL, CLEMENTS, BERRY, HARLAN, WRIGHT, DILLARD, DUCKETT, SCOTT, MILLERMAN, WALKER, PICKNEY (sic PINCKNEY), COBB, HALL.

 

 

     John Wesley Jackson II, b July 11, 1809 in Gwin- net County, Georgia, d February 4, 1886 of measles in Falls County, Texas and buried in Stranger Cemetery, was a son of John Wesley Jackson I, b 1780, who was a son of Edward Jackson, b February 14, 1755 in South Carolina, who was an American Revolutionary War soldier, and his first wife, Mary Charity ("Polly" Hill) Jackson, also of South Carolina, had 8 children. He married his second wife, Mary Paulina (Polly) Hall, an Irish bride in June 1803, and they had 7 children.

     In 1833 in Gwinnet County, Georgia, John Wesley II was married to Lydia Berry Clements, b May 26, 1812 in Greenville District, South Carolina, d June 17, 1858 of malaria in Sevier County, Arkansas - a daughter of a school teacher, Salathiel Clements, b 1780 in North Carolina of Welsh parentage, that came with the Hugonots to South Carolina, d July 15, 1863 in Calhoun County, Alabama, and his wife, Ellender W. Berry Clements, ca 1786 in Virginia, d November 30, 1864 in Calhoun County, Alabama. Her father was William Berry and was in the Revolutionary War.

     The Jacksons and Clements were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church - South. They moved to Alabama in late 1833, where they lived for twenty-four years. John Wesley Jackson II served as a Captain of the militia in 1847.

     In 1858, John Wesley and Lydia relocated in Sevier County, Arkansas where their son-in-law and eldest daughter-Thomas D. and Rebecca (Jackson) Harlan - had settled two years previously. Lydia Berry (Clements) Jackson died there soon after their arrival In Christmas week 1863, John Wesley and some of his children, and the Thomas D. Harlan family moved into Red River County, Texas; and subsequently they all settled in Falls County on Blue Ridge, the Harlans in 1867; Jacksons in 1869.

     John Wesley and Lydia Berry (Clements) Jackson II were the parents of six sons and six daughters, and among the children who came to Falls County were:

     Rebecca Charity Jackson, b November 18, 1834 in Gwinnet County, Georgia, d August 13, 1914 in Falls County, Texas - married Thomas Daniel Harlan.

     Nancy Maria Jackson, b April 17, 1836 in Gwinnet County, Georgia - married ca 1858 to William Jack- son Wright, b in Arkansas, d September 17, 1906 at Iredell, Bosque County, Texas.

     William Stuart Jackson, b June 4, 1838 in Benton County, Alabama, d October 28, 1862 while in the Confederate States Army, at Memphis, Tennessee, and buried in the Soldiers Burying Ground there.

     Salathiel Perry Jackson, b May 27, 1839 in Benton County, Alabama, d October 24, 1862 while in the Confederate States Army, at Memphis, Tennessee, and buried in the Soldiers Burying Ground there.

     Minerva Jane Jackson, b June 24, 1841 in Alabama - married Thomas Milton Dillard, b April 12, 1826 in South Carolina, d July 12, 1876 and buried in Blue Ridge Cemetery - a son of Samuel and Lydia (Duckett) Dillard, and a brother of Odell Duckett Dillard, who came to Falls County, Texas in late 1874 after the death of his second wife in Arkansas.

     Sarah Isabella Jackson, b May 23, 1843 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, d October 7, 1882 at Blue Ridge and buried there - married June 30, 1860 to James Madison Moreland.

     Amanda Catherine Jackson, b August 2, 1845 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, d 1885 in Galveston, Texas - married Thomas W. M. Scott.

     John Wesley Jackson III, b June 12, 1847 in Alabama, d December 25, 1916 at Fresno, California- married in Falls County, Texas on January 18, 1870 to Nancy Henry Millerman, b April 5, 1854 in Montgomery County, Texas, d April 5, 1943 in Fresno, California - a daughter of John Sanford and Mary (Harlan) Millerman.

     Jeremiah Clements Jackson ("Jerry"), b August 13,1849 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, d November 22, 1930 in Fresno, California - married first to Ida Harlan, b March 29, 1858, d February 12, 1879 and buried in Blue Ridge Cemetery - a daughter of Silas and Annie Ellizabeth (sic Elizabeth) (Lester) Harlan. About 1889, Jerry married second to "Lou" (maiden name un- known), who also had an early death.

     Isaac Sanford Jackson, b July 28, 185.1 and died June 8, 1926 in Fresno, California; married February 8, 1893 in Bell County, Texas to Mary Elizabeth Walker, b May 1870, d December 4, 1928, in Fresno, California.

     Lydia Ann Clementine Jackson, b October 25, 1853 in Benton County, Alabama, d April 16, 1905 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas-married August 1,1875 to Albert John Pickney (sic Pinckney) Johnson, b February 14, 1847, d January 11, 1886 at Blue Ridge, Texas.

     Cicero Woodruff Jackson, b December 10, 1855 in Alabama, d November 13, 1908 in Fresno, California - married Nancy Caroline Cobb, b September 10, 1863 in Calhoun County, Alabama, d April 21, 1928 in Fresno, California - a daughter of Elijah Cobb, b 1831 in Alabama, d there in 1876, and his wife, Mary Susan (Hall) Cobb, b in Alabama, d there in 1868.
