THOMAS JEFFERSON HICKERSON

 

 

     Thomas Jefferson Hickerson, b October 19, 1874 at Valley Mills, McLennan County, Texas, d January 1952 at Rosebud,. Falls County, Texas – was a son of Washington Hickerson and his wife, a Miss Couch.

     On May 7, 1901 in Rosebud, Thomas was married to Ethel Conner, b July 7, 1877 in Tishomingo County, Mississippi, d May 12, 1911 in Rosebud - a daughter of Richard Benjamin and Margaret Jane (Donaldson) Conner, who had settled in Rosebud.

     Thomas Jefferson and Ethel lived at Crawford, Texas for three years before moving to Rosebud, where he was a farmer and interested in improving the quality of Sudan seed. He was a Deacon in the First Baptist Church of Rosebud, and both he and Ethel were active in every phase of their church.

     Ethel was a teacher until her marriage. She became a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 1927, and continued in this the rest of her life.

     Thomas Jefferson and Ethel (Conner) Hickerson had six children:

     Lee Conner Hickerson, b July 17, 1903 at Crawford, Texas, d July 15, 1976 - married first in 1933 to Dorothy Peters, and married second on May 3, 1947 to Jewel Blakley. He worked with the Immigration Service, and retired to San Antonio, where he died.

     Richard Benjamin Hickerson, b June 30, 1905 at Rosebud, d October 20, 1983 - married on June 14, 1930 to Altha Bill Poage. "Dick" worked with the Ex- tension Service, and was Radio Editor in College Station, Texas - having been a Texas A&M graduate.

     Emma Hickerson, b May 15, 1907 in Rosebud, d there on May 12, 1911.

     Margaret Janice Hickerson, b August 8,1909 in Rosebud - married first on September 7, 1934 to Clyde Smith Long, and married second on December 31, 1955 to Herman Schulz. "Janice" studied art at Baylor University, and nursing at Jeff Davis Hospital in Houston, Texas. She has many paintings in Central Texas homes, and is, in 1986, residing in Rosebud.

     Mary Hickerson, b April 25, 1912 in Rosebud, Texas - married on July 26, 1953 to Marvin L. Pullin. She had attended Baylor University, was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma - an honorary teacher organization - and taught math for twenty-five years at McAllen High School. After the death of her husband, Mary retired to Rosebud.

      Thomas Jefferson Hickerson, Jr., b December 14, 1915 in Rosebud - was a twin of Joseph Couch Hickerson. He graduated from Texas A&M, entering the U.S. Army and served during World War II in the European Theater with the Field Artillery - being discharged with the rank of Major. Tom, Jr. taught math and science in the Rosebud-Lott schools until he retired to his ranching interests and Square Dancing Club in Rosebud. On August 10,1947, he was married to Mary Ellen Cottle.

     Joseph Couch Hickerson, b December 14, 1915 in Rosebud - was a twin of Thomas Jefferson Hickerson, Jr. He graduated from Texas A&M, and was serving as a Soil Scientist in Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana when he was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II. He served with Military Intelligence in the Pacific Theater, and was discharged as a Major. On June 10, 1939, Joe was married to Anne Mayfield. After the end of World War II, Joe worked for twenty-five years in Soil Conservation in Arizona, and retired to ranching east of Rosebud.
