WILLIAM GEORGE HETHERINGTON

 

     William George Hetherington, b April 7, 1841 at Claiborne, Alabama, d at Reagan, Texas on October 26, 1930 in his ninetieth year - a son of John H. Hetherington, b in 1814 in South Carolina, and Rebecca J. (Kile) Hetherington, b in Alabama in 1822. The Hetherington family descended from natives of Ireland. John H, and Rebecca (Kile) Hetherington owned a cotton plantation near Claiborne, Alabama, working it with slaves. The Civil War began soon after John H. died, and his two eldest sons served in the Confederate States Army. John H. and Rebecca (Kile) Hetherington had seven children: William George, John Monroe, Benjamin Franklin, David L., James, Samuel P., and Annie E. Hetherington.

     William George Hetherington enlisted in Company A, 42nd Alabama Infantry, CSA, on April 4, 1862. He was captured at Vicksburg in 1863, paroled, and recaptured in Macon, Georgia in 1865 just as the war ended.

     On January 16, 1868, William George married Susan M. Broughton, b February 10, 1850 in Alabama, d May 3,1908 at Reagan, Texas, whom he met two months earlier when his brother, John Monroe, married his new wife's sister, Margaret Ann Broughton - daughters of Charles Richard and Mary R. (Snell) Broughton of Monroeville, Alabama - a town located about twenty miles from Claiborne. In December 1883, William George and his wife, Susan, with their four children, moved to Reagan, Falls County, Texas, where William had purchased an 80-acre farm. The four children of William George and Susan M. (Broughton) Hetherington were:

     William Charles Hetherington, b in 1868 in Mon- roe County, Alabama, d in 1927 at Reagan, Falls County, Texas. He returned to Alabama where he lived until a few years before his death. He is buried in Covington Cemetery at Reagan.

     James Monroe Hetherington, b May 19, 1871 in Monroe County, Alabama, d April 14, 1963 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas.

     Sarah R. Hetherington, b January 10, 1873 in Monroe County, Alabama, d November 28,1889 at Reagan, and buried in Covington Cemetery there.

     Mary J. Hetherington, b August 5, 1881 in Monroe County, Alabama, d September 19, 1888, and buried in Covington Cemetery at Reagan.

     William George and Susan M. (Broughton) Hetherington were both buried in Covington Cemetery at Reagan, Texas.
