THOMAS LESLIE HAYES

 

     Thomas Leslie Hayes, b August 21, 1870 in Prospect, Tennessee, d August 20, 1954 at the Hodge House in Marlin, Falls County, Texas - was a son of James Sanford and Sarah (Reed) Hayes, natives of Giles County, Tennessee. Thomas Leslie Hayes came to the Stranger Community of Falls County, Texas in 1886 with his parents and siblings, where he lived and farmed all his life. He married to Edna Arnett, b December 26, 1875 at Stranger, d September 14, 1948 and buried in Stranger Cemetery - a daughter of James Hansford and Phoebe (Somerville) Arnett, who married in Robertson County, Texas and settled in the Stranger Community of Falls County prior to the Civil War.

     Thomas Leslie Hayes was a Deacon and Sunday School Superintendent in the Stranger Baptist Church, and he served as a School Trustee in the Stranger School. Edna (Arnett) Hayes was also reared in the Stranger Baptist Church. They were the parents of five children (order of birth not known):

     Marvin V. Hayes - married Ethel Hammer.

     Curtis Hayes - married Bernice Lloyd, and they reside in Kosse, Texas.

     Sarah Hayes (called "Sadie") - married Robert Talmadge Brothers (called "Sport"), and had Edna Faye, Taylor Franklin, David, Robert, Ethel Mozelle, and Billy Brothers. "Sadie" lives in 1986 in a nursing in New Braunfels, Texas, where her daughter, Edna Faye, worked until her death.

     Lometa Hayes - a graduate of Sam Houston State University - taught school in Mexia, Texas, and married Fred Pearson Saltsman. They had a son, Fred Pearson Saltsman, Jr. They reside in Mexia, Texas.

     Esta Mae Hayes, b January 8, 1916, d May 23, 1945 - married Benton Briggs of Marlin, Texas. She is buried in Stranger Cemetery.
