JOHN H. GRISHAM

 

 

     John H. Grisham, b March 22,1844 in Tennessee, d November 8, 1910 at Durango, Falls County, Texas and buried in Union Cemetery - was the eldest of nine children of Thomas and Bettie (Witt) Grisham.

     On October 16, 1861, John was mustered into the Confederate States Army at Riceville, Tennessee, under Captain Bill Lafferty, Company H, 43rd Tennessee Regiment, Hood's Brigade. He was captured at Piedmont, Virginia in 1864, and was kept in a "Yankee" prison for eleven months.

     Because of the atrocities inflicted by the Union Government after the Civil War, Thomas and Bettie moved from Tennessee to Garland, Arkansas with their nine children, a grandson, and a nephew.

     In 1870, John H. Grisham and his brother, James Grisham, came to Texas - followed by two other brothers, Joseph and Robert Grisham.

     John G. Grisham married ca 1871 in Wortham, Freestone County, Texas to Deloach Crouch, b March 29, 1851 in Tennessee, d September 8, 1940 at Durango, and they settled in Durango after their marriage, where they reared their family. They had ten children, with six surviving to adulthood. The children who did not survive childhood were: Clara, Barbara, Katy, and Johnny Grisham. The six who survived were:

     James Wallace Grisham, b January 15, 1873 in Durango, d August 11, 1948 - married Ella Anne Davidson, b April 20, 1877, d March 7, 1952 and buried in Union Cemetery near Durango, Falls County, Texas.

     Ola Grisham, b August 22, 1883, died in Oklahoma - married John Keirsey, and moved to Oklahoma, where he also died.

     Bettie Grisham, b 1880 in Durango, d 1962 at Lott and buried in Union Cemetery near Durango - married Edward Turner Scott, b June 8, 1878 in Oklahoma, d February 19, 1924 at Durango - a son of Lanis and Tabitha (Rulam) Scott of Alabama, who moved to Oklahoma and then subsequently settled in Falls County, Texas.

     Effie Lee Grisham, b June 18, 1888, d January 15, L953 - married Daniel Guy Howze, b August 19, 1887, i February 1, 1962.

     Lucy Grisham, b April 29, 1891, d November 17, L966 and buried in Clover Hill Cemetery at Lott - married Gillis C. Anderson, b February 7, 1890, d June 3, 1968 and buried in Clover Hill Cemetery in Lott.

     Mary Ada Grisham, b December 25, 1893 at Durango - resides in 1986 in Marlin, Texas - married Ulysses S. Janes, b February 9, 1891 in Burleson County, Texas.
