LEONARD LENORE GARRETT

Leonard Lenore Garrett, b August 23, 1874 at Stranger, Falls County, Texas, d November 12, 1957 at Stranger and buried in Garrett Cemetery there - was a son of James Odell Garrett and his first wife, Martha Ann ("Mattie" Grffith) Garrett, b ca 1854, d 1878 buried in Stranger Cemetery at Stranger - a daughter of Leonard Lenore and Sarah (Owens) Griffith - natives of South Carolina who came to Falls County, Texas and settled at Stranger after the Civil War. Leonard's paternal grandparents were Thomas McKissick and Linea Frances (Brandon-Cornelison) Garrett - Republic of Texas pioneers.
Leonard's mother died when he was four years old, and he was reared by his father and his second wife, Elizabeth Ann (Jackson) Garrett. Leonard had suffered a back injury as a one-year old child, but he did not allow the resulting posture to affect his life as a
farmer, husband, and father. He was educated in the excellent school at Stranger, and was well read in the Bible and other papers and books. He was a Deacon in the Cumberland Presbyterian Churches at Fairview and Stranger.
On December 12, 1905 at Stranger, Leonard L. Garrett married Lucy Carrol (called "Carl") Hargrove, b October 21, 1881 in Limestone County, Alabama, d June 2, 1969 and buried in Garrett Cemetery at Stranger - a daughter of Edward and Elizabeth Lucinda (Higgins) Hargrove. They reared eight of nine children:
Glenn Willis Garrett, b September 28, 1906, d March 19, 1979 - married October 21,1929 to Ruby Elnora Ray, b October 12, 1915 in Alabama, and had children.
Hazel Estelle Garrett, b February 10, 1908 at Stranger - married first in 1934 to Robert S. Scoggins of North Carolina, and had one son, Robert Garrett, b March 15, 1937, who was adopted by Hazel's second husband, James Ernest Wakefield, b March 10, 1902, d April 9, 1975 in Abilene, Texas. Hazel now resides in Marlin, Texas with her sister, Berniece (Garrett) Fitte, while her son, Robert Garrett Wakefield, resides in Abilene with his family.
Berniece Euleta Garrett, b December 30, 1909�married first to Alton Umberfield and had one son; married second in 1933 in Robertson County, Texas to
John Maurice Fitte, D.V.M., b September 4, 1904, d February 10, 1972, who adopted her son and they had one daughter.
James Leonard Garrett, b July 22, 1912 at Stranger, married October 20, 1930 in Limestone County, Texas to Frankie Lou Brothers.
Keith Emil Garrett, b June 8, 1915 at Stranger, Falls County, Texas, d April 12, 1966 and buried in Garrett Cemetery at Stranger - was never married. Keith worked for his father on the farm, and with his brother-in-law, Dr. J. M. Fitte, in Veterinary Medicine.
Alma Forrest Garrett, b December 30, 1917 at Stranger - married Bernard Emerson Stewart, b December 12, 1908 - a son of James Arthur and Minnie (Turner) Stewart, and grandson of Samuel Emerson
Jones and Ann Josephine (Lee) Turner of Alabama who settled near Cego in Falls County, Texas. Alma and Bernard have two sons, Michael Keith Stewart, b September 21, 1945 in Waco; and Stephen Bernard Stewart, b September 5, 1951 in Waco.
Ruth Evelyn Garrett, b June I7, I9ZI at Stranger - married March 11,1946 in Marlin, Texas to Warren Crowell Ihrke, b September 19, 1920 in Adrian, Michigan - a World War II Navy veteran who retired after twenty years of military service. Warren is in the real estate business in Houston, where the family resides. They had three children: Paul Warren Ihrke, b Decem�ber 6,1947 in Durham, North Carolina who married Helen Ruth Wiechert; Terry Ruth Ihrke, b October 27, 1950 in Bethesda, Maryland in the Naval Hospital who married Captain Wyatt Andrew Morris of EI Paso, Texas; and Ted Garrett Ihrke, b February 23, 1959 in Oak-Knoll Navy Bospital in Oakland, California who is a graduate of Texas A&M University, as was his older brother.
Kenneth Griffith Garrett, b May 7, 1924 at Stranger - married in 1950 in Marlin to Mary Ann Peevy.
Gene Morris Garrett, b & d in 1926, and buried in Garrett Cemetery at Stranger, Falls County, Texas.
