JOHN H. COVINGTON

 

 

     John H. Covington, b 1803 in Tennessee, d before 1871 at Reagan, Falls County, Texas - was married in April 1824 in Rutherford County, Tennessee to Jane Marlin, b 1804 in Tennessee, dafter 1871 in Falls County, Texas-a daughter of William Marlin, b 1760 in North Carolina, d 1805 in Rutherford County, Tennessee, and his wife, Rachel Marlin, b 1765 in North

Carolina, d in Falls County - after December 16, 1852 when she wrote a short, personal Will. Jane was listed as a widow by April 1871, living with her daughter and son-in-law, William W. and Mary Jane (Covington) Crouch.

     John and Jane Covington remained in Tennessee until 1845, when they came to Falls County, Texas with their children and Jane's eighty-year-old mother, Rachel Marlin, who wanted to see her two sons, John and James Marlin, pioneers to Texas in 1832. It was ironic that John Marlin lived only two years after the arrival of his sister's family, and his mother.

     The land, owned by Andrew Jackson Powers, was available since he had been killed in Captain Benjamin Bryant's fight with the Indians in 1839. John Covington purchased that acreage, and lived in the community called "Covington," which disappeared when Reagan was established in 1870. His family and descendants lived and participated in school, church, and community affairs for over a hundred years. The children of John H. and Jane (Marlin) Covington were:

     Rachel Louisa Covington, b January 16, 1826, d January 26, 1887 and buried in Covington Cemetery in Falls County, Texas - was married September 6, 1846 in Robertson County, Texas to Isaac Newton Crouch, Jr.

     Elizabeth Julia Ann Covington, b December 8, 1827 in Tennessee - married in Limestone County, Texas on January 14, 1849 to Fleming James Barton - a son of David and Sarah (Borum) Barton.

     William Marlin Covington, b September 9, 1829 in Tennessee, d December 29, 1859 - married 1853 to Emily (maiden name unknown), and had John H. Covington, b August 19, 1855 in Falls County, Texas; Larkin F. Covington, b 1856; and Thomas H. P. Covington, b December 19, 1857 in Falls County.

     Larkin A. Covington, b November 21, 1831 in Tennessee, d December 3, 1908 in Reagan, Falls County, Texas and buried in Covington Cemetery - married April 28, 1864 to Emily Smith, b August 9, 1843 in Texas - a daughter of Charles and Rebecca (Marlin) Smith, and Larkin's cousin. Larkin A. Covington served in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War.

     Mary Jane Covington, b December 11, 1833 - married September 27, 1849 in what became Falls County, Texas to William Wilford Crouch, b February 27, 1827 in Tennessee, d February 12, 1878.

     John H. Covington, b February 20, 1835 in Tennessee, d February 1, 1883 and buried in Covington Cemetery - married January 4, 1860 to Mary Elizabeth Boren, b January 3, 1842, d July 8, 1902 - a daughter of B. A. and Rachel Boren. Mary Elizabeth (Boren) Covington married second in 1887 to John's brother-in-law, Isaac Newton Crouch, after his first wife, Rachel Louise (Covington) Crouch died in 1887.

     James Calvin Covington, b September 11, 1837, d February 6, 1864 and buried in Covington Cemetery.

     Marcus L. Covington, b February 14, 1841 in Tennessee, d July 25, year unknown.

     Nancy E. Covington, b August 9, 1843 in Tennessee, d July 25, 1844 in Tennessee.

     Wilson R. Covington, b June 23, 1845, d October - day and year unknown.
