Welcome to Lorain County OHGenWeb.

Lorain County was created in 1824 from parts of  HuronCuyahoga and  Medina  Counties.  The name "Lorain" was derived from Alsace Lorainne, France and requested
by early pioneer, Herman ELY.

Elyria is our county seat and Wellington Village is the home of our county fair and historically cheese industry prior to the arrival of refrigerated railroad transportation. The photo above is  Lorain Harbor Lighthouse   located at the mouth of the Black River.

This website is part of   OHGenWeb,  USGenWeb,  and  WorldGenWeb.  Visit  The USGenWeb Archives for Lorain County  and the  Ohio State Resources for Researchers.
