Welcome to Lorain County OHGenWeb.
Lorain County was created in 1824 from parts of
Huron,
Cuyahoga
and Medina
Counties. The name "Lorain" was derived from Alsace Lorainne, France and requested
by early pioneer, Herman ELY.
Elyria
is our county seat and Wellington Village is the home of our county fair and historically cheese industry prior to the arrival of
refrigerated railroad transportation. The photo above is
Lorain Harbor Lighthouse
located at the mouth of the Black River.

Wellington Town Hall c. 1885 still stands today and houses the Wellington Police and the Village's government offices. This was the site of the Opera House. The renovated steeple on the church below is part of Wellington United Methodist Church which is more than 190 years old.
