Humboldt County is Nevada's oldest county, created by the Utah Territorial Legislature in 1856. It was also one of Nevada's original nine counties created in 1861. (In 1869, a portion of Humboldt County was given to Churchill County.) The county was named for the Humboldt River, which John C. Fremont named in honor of Baron Friedrich Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt, a German naturalist, traveler and statesman.
Unionville was the first county seat. In 1873, when the mining boom died in Unionville, the county seat was moved to Winnemucca, which was located on the transcontinental railroad line.
