The repository of these records will mainly depend upon the location, and the time frame, in which the record was created. If you know the County in which the event occurred, please see the NJGenWeb COUNTY web site first, as these sites often maintain some records.

Tax Records

In general, (property) tax records are maintained by the township/city where the tax was levied and paid. You should contact the town/city clerk of that specific location. [See list of New Jersey municipalities online].

Land Records (Deeds)

Land records, or deeds, in New Jersey are generally maintained at the County Clerk's office, in the county where the land being transferred was located. [See list of county court locations in New Jersey]

You should first check the NJGenWeb County site to see if there are specific instructions regarding deed research in that county.

Secretary of State's Deeds, Surveys and Commissions, ca. 1650-1785 are available through the New Jersey State Archives. Cost: $5.00 per deed; provide the name of the grantor and grantee, location (county), and approximate year

Probate Records (Wills)

Probate records in New Jersey can be found in the following locations:

- Wills and Estate Inventories 1670-1952 from the New Jersey State Archives. $5.00 per packet (up to 10 pages); provide the name of the deceased, approximate death date, and county or major city of residence. Include file number, if known.

- For intestate (no will) estates, administrations of estates, wills, and guardianships from 1785 to the present contact the county surrogate's office where the estate was filed. Regarding Wills & Probate and a list of county surrogate's offices

Court & Other Records
Court records are found in the location where the event [court session] was held, at the municipal, county, state, or national level.
