Passport applications can be an excellent source of genealogical information, especially about foreign-born individuals. The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) has passport applications from Oct. 1795-Mar. 1925; the U.S. Department of State has passport applications from Apr. 1925 to the present.

NATURALIZATION

State-Level Naturalizations (by the Supreme Court, Chancery Court, Perogative Court and Legislature) all counties, 1750s-1830s by the New Jersey State Archives. Cost: $5.00 per record; provide name, county, and approximate year; almost all are men because women obtained citizenship through their husbands.
County-Level Naturalizations - (Court of Common Pleas) for Burlington (1790-1956), Camden (1844-1923), Essex (1792-1931), Mercer (1838-1930), Ocean (1850-1951), Sussex (1817-1958), & Union counties (1845-1931). Ffrom the New Jersey State Archives. F or all other counties please contact the local county clerk. Cost: $5.00 per record; provide name, county, and approximate year; almost all are men because women obtained citizenship through their husbands.
