COUNTY FORMATION

Carroll County was established 23 Dec 1840 from a portion of Strafford County. The town of Madison was incorporated from the western part of Eaton in 1852. The boundaries were expanded 05 Jan 1853, when Bartlett, Jackson, and Hart's Location were added from Coos County.

Carroll County was named in honor of Charles Carroll of Carrollton. He was a member of the Continental Congress and a U.S. Senator. He was known as the richest man in America, owning 12,700 acres. He originally held slaves but later became an abolitionist. He helped start the Bank of North America and was one of the founders of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. He became a public idol greatly admired by the nation. The last living signer of the Declaration of Independence, he died in 1832, aged 95 years.

Ossipee is the county seat.
