CRESTON TOWNSHIP


NOTE: Approximate locations of the school districts can be found on the township map to the left. Creston Township is located in Township 20 North, Range 1 East (T20N, R1E). Section numbers (S) are given as a reference point only and are as found in the 1899 Atlas. In some cases, the buildings were moved or a new building constructed nearby which may have been located in a different section.

District No. 33 (S18, T20N, R1E) - District set up January 15, 1874. Land donated for school by Edward T. Graham in 1878. Schoolhouse moved into Creston during 1883. New school built in 1886.

Graduates* of Creston High School (10 grades through 1916): The High School has closed, but the elementary school remains open.

District No. 43 (S26, T20N, R1E) - District was set apart on January 20, 1875. "Rosebud School" was formed on June 20, 1875. District was divided in April of 1886, creating a second school (District No. 74). First record of school census was dated November 1, 1884.

According to the March 5, 1886 Columbus Democrat, during February there were 27 pupils enrolled with an average daily attendance of 20. Myra Mise, Teacher.

In 1954, sections 13, 14, and part of 15 were added to the district. The District was dissolved on June 1, 1966; the land was added to District No. 39 in Colfax County.
District No. 45 (S29, T20N, R1E) - "Pawnee School" was organized February 10, 1875. School was temporarily closed February 12, 1894 due to shortage of funds. New building was dedicated on December 12, 1925.

Pioneer students:

District No. 45 was known as the Social Center School because of its early-organized literary society. W. C. Jackson and R. Moran were mainly responsible for initiating its first programs in the community. The District was dissolved June 1, 1966.
District No. 58 (S30, T20N, R1E) - "Murdock School" was formed March 15, 1878. First schoolhouse was 16 x 30 feet with tar paper sides and a roof. It had no floor and the pupils sat on benches around the sides of the room.

The District was dissolved June 1, 1981, and attached to District No. 33.
District No. 74 (S11, T20N, R1E) - "Hill Siding School" also known as "Timber Hill" was formed on April 5, 1886 from the division of District No. 43. First record of a school census was dated July 2, 1894.

Early school board:

District was dissolved and attached to Districts No. 43 and 78 on June 1, 1954


District No. 78 (S5, T20N, R1E) - "Hardscrabble School" also known as "The Boning School." Date of formation not known, but was apparently in existence in 1887. First census record was dated June 27, 1897. Property was attached from District No. 33 on June 7, 1932.

Early school board:

District was dissolved June 1, 1966 and added to District No. 38 in Colfax County.
