Thomas Newton Sanders was born 16 Feb 1832, in Shelby Co., IN, to Benjamin & Diadems Carr Sanders. He died 28 Dec 1885, Brownville, Nemaha Co. NE and was buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery. brief history

Julia Marie Hickman was born 29 May 1838, in Hamilton Co. OH, to Wesley & Virginia Whitley Hickman. She died 18 Dec 1907, Nemaha Co. NE and was buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Julia's  father, Wesley Hickman died in 1844 of dropsy. He had been a river boat pilot on the OH river I believe. I have not been able to confirm that.   After his death Virginia, Julia's mother, took her to IL where she later met Thomas. Virginia had been a seamstress according to what information I have.   Virginia's maiden name was Bateman, according to Julia's death certificate. She was listed as Whitely when she married Wesley Hickman.

In 1853, Thomas's family lived for a time in Edgar Co. IL, however I believe Thos. & Julia were married in IN. Thomas & Julia were married Apr 1854. They had been raised together as children.

Most of the Sanders in the Nemaha County area, especially Peru, Auburn & Brownville are relatives of mine. Most of them were newspaper people except for my grandfather, Geo. Emory Newton Sanders who chose the orchard business.  After they lost their farm during the depression, they ran a boarding house (Sanders House) for college students across from the State Teachers College in Peru. I remember spending time with my grandparents there.

I also have a couple of pictures of my grandmother's boarding house in Peru, the year about 1927, she had female roomers at that time. There are names of a few of the students on the back.

I also have a picture taken about 1929 when my grandmother had changed to all male roomers. There are a few names listed on the back of this picture also.

1. Sanders Family taken about 1916-1917. Back Row, L-R:  Glen Pumel, Rose Rains Pumel (Rose a sister of my grandmother, Dora L. Mae Rains Sanders); Oscar Carey Pumel; Dora L. Mae Rains Sanders; Albert 'Merle' Sanders (son of G. E. N.); Geo. E. N. Sanders; Francis 'Frank' T. Sanders (youngest son & only son of G.E.N. & Dora); Grace B. Sanders Sperry (dau. of G.E.N. & 1st wife Anna Bertha Crother Sanders. Merle also from this marriage).
Front Row: Gerald Sperry (son of Grace); Leland Pumel (son of Rose & Oscar); Dorothy L. Sanders (my mother & only dau of G.E.N & Dora); and Marie Sperry (dau of Grace. Her husband was also named Gerald).

2. In front of Christian Church at Brownville, NE taken in 1912. On left is G.E.N. Sanders, my grandfather who was the superintendent at the time with Burton Davies who was the minister.

3.  This is a photo of  G. Edwin Sanders & his class taken between 1917-1920. I am not sure which school district this was other than it says Dist. 34.   None of the students are identified. Edwin is standing in the back row on the right side. He taught school in several different communities for a time.

John was preceeded in death by his wife of 63 years, Glenna (McKenny) Sanders on Jan. 9, 2003.

Sanders started his newspaper career in the spring of 1935 as a "printers devil."  Learning the newspaper business by starting in the production department was something of an advantage, he said, for when the opportunity for management came in the mid 50s, that background was beneficial.

Having advanced from washing presses to printing, linotype operator, machinist and shop foreman, the opportunity to run the newspaper came when J. Alan Cramer purchased the Nemaha County Herald in the early fifties. After about two years, Sanders was named manager and editor, and became a partner with J. Alan Cramer in 1960.

John served many organizations as an active member and officer including: The Nebraska Land Foundation, Peru State College first president's advisory council, Brownville Historical Society, Brownville Village Theater, Auburn Fire Department, Auburn Rescue Squad, Auburn Christian Church, Nemaha Valley Museum, Auburn Kiwanis Club, Masonic York Rite, National Outdoor Writers Assn, Auburn Chamber of Commerce, Auburn Ambassadors, Auburn Board of Public Works, City Planning Commission, and as President of the Nebraska Press Advertising Service.

Sanders military service included a year in the U.S. Navy teaching firefighting.

In 1992, Mark Cramer of Estes Park Colorado, purchased the interest of his father, Alan Cramer, and Sanders to become publisher of this newspaper. This ended a stretch of over five decades of active newspaper involvement for John.

Judy Rogge has been a typesetter for this newspaper since 1971 and remains in that capacity.
