THE JACOB GERGENS FAMILY

Jacob Gergens and Appolonia Evalina Frick came to America from Germany in 1838 with their respective parents. Both families settled in the vicinity of Beaver, Pike Co., Ohio. They were married in Pike County, March 20 1852. They lived in that area until 1885 when they moved to Nemaha County, Nebraska, where Jacob homesteaded southeast of Howe. In 1873 they lived on a farm southwest of Salem, in Richardson County. In 1875, Jacob puchased a farm 3 1/2 miles southeast of Humboldt where the family resided for many years.

Thirteen children were born to this couple, seven of them in Ohio: Mattie, who married John Tenney; Catherine, who married Lee Roy Mason of Stella, Nebraska; Jacob W.; Mary, who married John Gardner and lived on what came to be known as the August Moritz place, four miles west of Stella and one mile south; Frances, who married John Schmelzel of Humboldt; Peter, who married Anna Reynolds and lived on a farm northeast of Humboldt, a farm which later passed to his son Warren; and Martin, who married Emma Pritts of Stella and lived near there. During the early settling of Oklahoma as a state, the Tenney, Mason, Schmelzel, Gardner and Martin Gergens families removed to that region.

Born in Nebraska were William, Lewis, Charles, Irene, John and Arthur Ruel, the latter two being born near Salem and Humboldt, respectively. Charles died in infancy and Jacob W. lost his life in a hunting accident when he was 23. William married Louella Creed and they lived most of their married lives in or near Humboldt; Lewis married Agnes Kroh of Stella and they also lived four miles west of Stella. One son of Lewis and Agnes, Glenn, moved to Twin Falls, Idaho. The Gardners and the Lewis and John Gergens families all lived in Porter Precinct (Nebraska equivalent of a township) and their children -- Lola Gardner, Gerald, Glenn and Thelma Gergens -- all attended Porter Center school. Thelma Gergens and her husband Hubert Benson lived on the John Gergens farm in Porter Precinct from 1934-1941 and their son, Wayne also attended Porter Center school.

Irene married Rudolph Watzke, who owned a clothing store in Humboldt. Irene had the honor of being the first Worthy Matron of the Humboldt chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. John married Nellie Vaught in Humboldt, August 17, 1904. They had one daughter, Thelma. Arthur Ruel married Clara Antrim. They lived in Humbodt and Auburn, where he owned a dray company.
