1926: Death of Lydia A. Spitzer-Castor-Mason-Walters at Stella. Verbatim copy of her obituary:
"Mrs. Lydia A. Walters
"Death claims one of our oldest pioneers, Mrs. Lydia A. Walters passes
"On last Saturday morning at 4:20 [July 24, 1926] at her home near the Mason school northwest of Stella, passed from the earth the equal of one of the most beloved women of the community. "Grandma," as she was familiarly known by her large circle of friends, passed away after a lingering illness of five months, aged 82 years, 9 months. Lydia A. Spitzer was born in Hardin county, Ohio, October 25, 1843; married to Lloyd L. Mason of Kenton, Ohio, December 18, 1866, and he preceded her in death January 30, 1908. Leaving her old home in Ohio, emigrating by covered wagon with her husband and family, settling in Nemaha county, Nebraska, October 14, 1874. Born to this union were nine children: one son [Perry] died at the age of 14 years. The surviving children are Findley E. Mason, Peru; Emmett M. Mason and Grace E. Curtis, Stella; Sarah A. Tonnemaker, Florence G. Doss, Beatrice; Mary A. Thompson, Noel, Missouri; Oscar W. Mason, Martin, S.D.; Jessie A. Buckley, Niwot, Colorado. One son Jacob Castor living near Nemaha City. October 15, 1915, united in marriage to Aaron Walters, the bereaved husband, who, with the nine children, 22 grandchildren and 24 greatgrandchildren, are left to morn her loss.
"In the death of Mrs. Walters, this community in which she lived for 53 years, loses one of God's most noble women. Her kind and generous hospitality was shared by all friends and neighbors. At age 15 years, she united with the Methodist church at Kenton, Ohio. About fifteen years ago united with the Baptist church of Stella, and remained a consecrated and loyal member until called to her eternal reward. The only thing to alleviate our grief is the hope of reunion on that great day when all will be united in the land of peace and rest beyond the river, free from toil and pain; where death and suffering are unknown, where we may remain throughout the endless ages of eternity in peace and in rest.
"Rev. R. I. Clemings, pastor Stella Baptist church, was in charge. He held a prayer service at the home Sunday afternoon at 2:30, when a quartette comprising Dr. Montgomery, Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Kimsey and Miss Ninon Gentry sang "Asleep in Jesus." Then the procession left for Prairie Union for funeral and burial. The church was crowded to overflowing by those who had come to pay their last respects and the casket was beautiful with a profuse floral offering.
"At the church, the quartette sang "No Night There," and "Rock of Ages" with Miss Joy Hoppe as accompanist. Mrs. Kimsey sang "Some Day" as a solo. Four granddaughters were the flower bearers: Mrs. George Davis, Misses Thelma Mason, Opal and Ruby Doss. The pall bearers were close neighbors: W. B. Cooney, Joe Carsh, M. A. Smith, J. L. Moody, Chris Albrecht and Joseph Norris."
Ref: The above obituary was borrowed from Beulah Mason Armstrong. The exact paper in not known, but it is probably from Stella or Auburn Nebraska in July, 1926.
